Default Opinions on lace doily please

I am preparing to make my first knit lace doily. I have chosen a square
pattern for this endeavor. It is worked back and forth in rows, until the
end, when I will have to pick up stitches all around and work circularly for
the edging. I am considering adding selvedge stitches to the sides, to make
the picked up stitches evenly spaced, but I don't know if the doily will
still lay flat with the slipped stitches. On the sweater I'm currently
working on, those selvedge stitches turn slightly to the inside.
Thoughts? Anyone?

That's what I'm thinking of doing, I'm just curious if the slipped stitches
are going to cause a ridge between the edging and the main body of the
doily.

I always Purl the last stitch, then when I turn to start the new row,
I slip the 'now' first stitch as if to knit... this makes a selvedge
edge that is very nice and neat, very much like a crocheted
slip-stitch edging.
