Default Printers for printing fabric sheets...

After helping my dad get a new monitor, he gave me a nice check to cover the
cost of the monitor and then some... So now I'm thinking I'll finally get a
printer!

What do folks use/prefer for printing fabric sheets?

Thanks,
Cappy

Just make sure it is an INKJET and not a LASER printer...

I've always had HP printers -- and have never had a problem with them. You
might want to be sure you have a flat feed -- instead of one that stands the
paper upright -- but other than that... no other suggestions from me.
Let's see what the others say!

I agree that a flat feed tray is easier if you want to use printable fabric
sheets. Other than that, our technology dept. at work recommends purchasing
a name brand and then, compare ink replacement costs. Printers are dirt
cheap but its the cost of the ink where they make their money. Some ink
cartridges are outrageous in price, so shop ink prices.

I had a Canon inkjet printer until very recently and loved it. In fact,
it's still in good working order, but it now lives at DD's house. It
did a great job on fabric. Now I have an HP all-in-one inkjet, and it
also does a lovely job. I'd recommend either brand, though I must admit
I liked the individual color ink tanks available on the Canon. Come to
think of it, though, I almost always had to replace all of the colors
within a day or so of each other. g

My ink jet printer is a lexmark and it works fine on both bought fabrics
sheets as well as wonder-under-backed fabric.

It's the way they work- the fabric is not designed to cope. The printers
work totally differently.

Inkjet printers work by blowing ink on to the surface which dries. This
is essentially a dying/painting process.

Laser printers work by heat embossing a powder onto the paper. the laser
heats the toner powder and pretty much lightly burns the paper.

Unless the fabric tells you it is suitable for laser printers, it is
probably NOT a good idea to try it.

Personally, I won't own a Lexmark because of the cost of their ink
cartridges. I've had a canon with individual ink cartridges that I love and
did fine on fabrics, but needed to be set (like all of them). Epson makes a
few printers that use their waterproof ink. I know it's been great for
brochures and other items that I don't want to run when you use a
highlighter or something. If I were to do a memory quilt, I'd use the Epson
to print the pictures for sure!

I've made many quilts with photos printed on muslin ironed onto freezer
paper using a laser printer and they came out fine.
