new here, getting re-inspired
Greetings everyone,
I'm a semi-amateur bead artist...I say that because I lack lots of experience but I am fortunate to have a few faithful clients who like to buy my pieces. I have gone through lots of distracting life events lately like moving and illness, and now I'm realising that I've neglected my beads for too long because of it - yikes! Now I want to get back into the swing of things again, I thought it would help to be among peers (that is, if I can call myself a "peer", there seem to be many professionals here!) I am American, but I live in France, so please excuse my strange English, it gets kind of distorted for lack of practise I know what you're going to ask...what kinds of cool beads do I find here? None! I'm in a region where people don't seem to do much with their spare time besides posing in cafés and smoking, so not a lot of hobby shops or specialised shops here. I get my stuff on visits to the States and I subscribe to B&B. I have no website, and I have no solid direction in my beadmaking, so I really need to learn and get moving. Other passions of mine include polymer clay, knitting and crochet, sewing, origami, and most of all, TEA. I'm drinking a nice hot Lapsang Souchong right now. Look forward to meeting everyone, Shibumi |

I am American, but I live in France, so please excuse my strange English, it gets kind of distorted for lack of practise Sounds fine to me. Where in France are you? Other passions of mine include polymer clay, knitting and crochet, sewing, origami, and most of all, TEA. I'm drinking a nice hot Lapsang Souchong right now. My partner is a Tea Snob, so we have an entire cupboard full of interesting teas, and we enjoy experimenting in the tea maker. Our standard "house brand" is 2 parts green, 1 part black, and 1 part flavored (usually a fruit or spice mix). A few days ago he made a batch with Typhoo, Chinese green, and cranberry spice which tasted like the distilled essence of Autumn! Shibumi -- If you ever get to Paris, here's a list you may find useful (written
by Chris): PARIS by Chris Gudule 52 rue de Richelieu (1st arrondissement) 75001 Paris Tel: 01-47-03-93-50 Though not really a bead shop--it sells mostly jewelry--this is the shop where I bought three strands of blue beads and a piece of labradorite. My girlfriend bought a number of old silver beads. Gudule had the fantastic old beaded Tibetan wedding outfit that I mentioned in another thread. If Valerie is still working there when you go, please tell her hi for me. Matiete Premiere 12 rue de Sevigne (4th arr., near the border of the 3rd arr.) 75004 Paris Tel: 01-42-78-40-87 This is a good looking shop with lots of new Murano beads. The first time I visited the shop, I didn't buy anything. But I told my girlfriend as we were leaving that one grouping of new Murano beads was the perfect color for a certain friend of ours. After that friend got called to help with one of our cats while we were away, I went back to the shop and bought some of the Murano beads to make a thank-you necklace. The shop is pricey, but not overly so, considering the quality of the beads and a Paris address. Venot Fils (3rd arr.) 145 rue du Temple 75003 Paris Tel: 01-42-78-12-88 There are two shops that face each other across the street. In addition, behind this shop across an alley is a second part of it. We didn't spend much time here, because they didn't have anything we wanted. They have lots of new beads, findings, and TONS of seed beads. Perles Box (3rd arr., at the very west corner of the arr.) 62 rue Bernard de Clairvaux 75003 Paris Tel: 01-42-78-28-78 This is the shop where I got the four marsupilami-colored beads that I mentioned in another thread. Other than that, the shop didn't interest us. Besides, one of the clerks was snarky. Le Detail Qui Tue 43 rue Bobillot (13th arr.) 75013 Paris Tel: 01-45-81-29-85 This is a tiny shop where I got some green beads to compliment some older beads I had at home. The shop owner is a nice woman who only carries reasonably priced new beads. Can't remember the name Place du Pont Neuf (1st arr.) (Right at the tip of Pont Neuf on the Ile de la Cite) We stopped in here one evening. The owner was talking deals with someone else, and barely paid us any attention after we told him that we weren't interested in pearls (he has a good number of secondhand pearls) or gold rings or quantity purchases. La Droguerie (lost the street number) rue du Jour (1st arr.) Near Les Halles (a big shopping mall) in Paris The owners have another of these shops in Nantes. We started our trip in Nantes--we went directly there by train from Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport, didn't pass go, didn't collect $200--where my gf's parents live, so we visited both shops. We didn't stay long in either one. The shops have new beads in glass and poly. They also carry an extensive collection of ribbons, buttons, feather, and all kinds of fabric accessories. In fact, I don't think of La Droguerie as a bead shop as much as I do a fabric accessory shop that also carries beads. There's something I really don't like about these shops: Their beads are displayed in glass jars that sit on shelves. No problem so far. But there are signs all over the place saying that customers aren't allowed to open the jars; only a salesclerk is allowed to do it. I like being able to pick up a bead and learning how it feels, even if there's little chance I'll buy it. La Boite a Perles 194 rue Saint Denis (2nd arr.) 75002 Paris We wanted to go to this shop because we'd heard good things about it. So one day we went. It was closed because the owner had gotten sick and closed early for the day. Before going back the next day, we called (well, my gf called, since my French isn't all THAT good) to make sure it'd be open. We found out on the phone that it didn't have old beads and it didn't have Murano beads, so we decided not to go. What does it have? We never found out. Can't remember the name (lost the street number) rue Victor Duruy (15th arr.) Near the Pasteur Institute. The shop carries beads and jewelry. It had a number of Murano beads. But all beads were horribly expensive. I expect to pay a premium price for beads in Paris, but this shop's prices were outrageous. To give an example, you remember that I bought some Murano beads at Matiete Premiere. They cost between one and two euros each. This shop had similar, but not quite so nice, Murano beads that cost about three times that much. We didn't stay long. There's a wholesale bead shop that we visited, but we can't remember the name or location. I think anyone can buy there, but someone not buying for business might have to spend at least $50. If I remember right, you can find it listed in Paris's yellow pages. From: OK for Paris but in France there is not only Paris. My name is Nadine, I have a bead shop at sea side in Normandie Le Treport 170 km far from Paris, I'm also glass beadmaker, member of the ISGB.
