Pattern for bible cover
My granddaughter is receiving a new Bible for Christmas. My daughter
wants me to make her a cover for it. Does anyone know of a site with free patterns for this? I told her that I doubted I would have it done for Christmas. She said she didn't expect me to do that, but she would like for me to make the cover. Sherry Starr |

I googled "bible cover pattern free". This was the first one on the list
of results http://sewing.about.com/od/bagstotespurseproject/ig/Free-Bag---Purse-Patterns/Book-Cover-with-Zipper.htm or http://tinyurl.com/dzz6ag Julia in MN Sherry Starr wrote: My granddaughter is receiving a new Bible for Christmas. I can't aim you to a pattern, Sherry, but I certainly can show you some
terrific fabrics. I used some of these when I was backing quilts for our grandchildren. Making the cover is quite simple - assuming, of course, that you have the bible in your hands. Doing it otherwise could be tricky. Just go see what the Spider Web folks have to offer: http://www.thespiderswebfabricshop.c...tian_main_1Not affiliated but would like to be. I saw several that I liked. I will have my daughter look at that site. She offered to get the fabric, and I told her I would do it. She knows nothing about quilting, and she would probably buy satin or something awful to sew, lol. Bless her heart, she thinks I can do anything. I tried to get out of it by telling her she could buy the cover at any Christian book store, and they would even embroider her name on it. She called my tonight and said the covers at the bookstore cost a little more than the Bible. I was so tempted to tell her to just get one, and I would pay for it, but being the nice mother and grandmother that I am, I resisted that urge. Sherry Starr |

LOL. Forgive me for laughing but I had a niece ask me to make 18
pincushions for her fellow Sunday school classmates - because it would be cheaper. Yes. Indeed. More LOL. Yes. Store-bought bookcovers and bible covers are certainly cheaper - especially if they are free - but, Sherry, you can do one that will be age appropriate (and I have no clue what is appropriate for a ten year-old but I'm certain you can do one that is very, very special). This choice won't be easy - I used the 'footprints in the sand" for the graduates; Yes, Jesus Loves me for many of the wee ones. Don't know what you choose for a preteen. Probably not Noah's Ark - but you'll know. And it will be special because her granny made it. Polly "Sherry Starr" wroteThank you, Polly. I was wondering about the fabric. She is 10. I've made many covers for paperback books. Just take the closed Bible and
measure from the far edge of the front cover, around the spine and across the back cover. Add 3/4 in. Measure from top to bottom. Add 3/4 in. Make a quilted 'placemat' with those dimensions- just sandwich the outer fabric to the lining fabric with a thin batting between and 'quilt as desired'. On the 'top/outside' you can include a block, row of mini-blocks or contrasting strip of fabric or fancy stitching or whatever. Just keep it to those dimensions. If the Bible has a thick sturdy cover I'd say add 1 in. in each direction rather than 3/4 in.- but most Bibles seem to have a rather flexible thinner cover. Then use the vertical measurement (top to bottom- including the 3/4 in.) for the inside 'flap's. Cut 2 pieces of fabric 6.5 in. wide by the height. Cut 2 pieces of fusible (Wonder Under, Heat & Bond Lite, etc. and be sure the fabrics don't have any fabric softener or the fusible won't fuse) 3-1/4 in. by the height plus 3/4 in. measurement. Fold each 6.5 in. in half lengthwise wrong sides together, press the crease flat and lay the fusible inside and fuse the wrong sides together. The fusible will hold the folded fabric together and give it some stiffness. Lay the 'flaps' in place on the 'lining side' of the 'placemat'- placemat laid flat with the outside of the cover down- and stitch flaps in place at the three outer edges to secure. If desired, at the top-center-inside you can add a piece of ribbon for a bookmark.... use Fray Check so the ribbon won't ravel. Stitch over the ribbon end several times to secure it. Bind the entire 'placemat'. Ta-Dah! Open the Bible very wide and slide the covers into the flaps on the placemat! Warning- I just woke up and haven't had my Diet Cherry Coke yet... read carefully and ask questions if needed. ;-) Here's photos of a paperback book cover that I made about 15 years ago- you'll get the idea... http://good-times.webshots.com/album/575588519cmLPzl Leslie & The Furbabies in MO.
