Default basswood

HI
I have a piece of dried(?) basswood that Im carving a bluejay family
with. Im finding that the wood is very hard, unlike normal basswood. Does
anyone know if its too dry,, old, or from a hard part of the tree and if it
can be softenned up somehow?

It all depends on where the basswood was grown if nothern Minn or
Ontario it should be good carving, but I have found that basswood will
get harder if left lying around inside too long, wood bought from hobby
stores seems to be this way sometimes.
For the hardness, try spraying lightly(misting) the wood with a mixture
of water and alcohol as you carve, it might make it easier going.Other
than that it's pretty difficult to diagnose your problems over the
internet with this particular piece of wood.(G)

All my wood is grown here in eastern canada.Sometimes like this time I ended
up with a hard piece. Ive heard stories about wood being too old, to big
across the butt, and ending up hard to carve.Ive got the project started now
and will probably finish it rather than discard it. Thanks
