Free Woodworking Demonstrations
Come join us during our Spring Open House and watch our instructors at
work in these free woodworking demonstrations. Michael Brolly will
demonstrate the tools and techniques of turning wood bowls on the
lathe and Maurice Fraser will show how to make the time-honored
dovetail joint using traditional hand tools. Many of our woodworking
instructors will also be on hand to talk about upcoming classes and
show examples of work produced in class.

Woodworking I
If you've always wanted to try woodworking but don't know where to
begin, this is the class for you. Learn woodworking basics including
shop safety, the proper use of hand tools and power tools, sharpening,
dressing rough lumber, properties of wood and basic joint making. Work
on a course-oriented project that incorporates these techniques.

Traditional Woodworking I
A thorough introduction to woodworking basics, this course reflects
both historical and current woodworking practices. Learn safe and
skillful joinery as employed in furniture-making using hand-tools,
machines and a precision-oriented approach. Begin work on an on-going
project of your own aided by demonstrations and illustrated lecture
notes. An emphasis will be placed on developing skills through
hands-on practice.

Contemporary Woodworking II
Begin to design and construct your own projects while learning more
advanced construction techniques through in-class demonstrations.
You'll start to work on more complex pieces to be completed over the
course of multiple terms. Past projects have included workbenches,
headboards, nightstands, coffee tables and wall cabinets. Come to
class with a project in mind, and we'll help you see it through to
completion. Prerequisite: Woodworking I

Traditional Woodworking II
This course will cover more advanced traditional woodworking
techniques — blade grinding, hand planes, grooved joints, shaping and
scrapers. If you enjoy the fine points of wood-working and want to
know more, we'll be happy to show you in this class. Prerequisite:
Woodworking I or approval of the instructor

Bowl Turning and Lathe Work - All Levels
Do you love wooden bowls and vases? Do you dream of making them on
your own? This course is a hands-on exploration of bowl turning with
the lathe, with an emphasis on creating one-of-a-kind wooden bowls,
vases and other hollow forms. Safety and proper use of the lathe and
tools will be covered in detail. Complete a course-oriented project of
your own design. Materials fee: $30

Woodworking Unplugged
Working with hand tools is a great way to get involved in woodworking
and continue at home…without a shop!
Learn production shop precision without noisy and expensive power
tools. Employ hand-finessed joints like plowed grooves, dado-housings,
rabbets and rubbed butt joints plus contouring with rasps, saws,
scrapers and combination planes. Explicit lecture demonstrations and
access to vintage woodworking tools are included.
Previous hand tool experience is helpful but not required.

Basic Carpentry
Focus on simple projects and techniques using common hand and portable
power tools. Learn the proper use and selection of tools and
materials, moldings, hardware and fasteners. Instruction is provided
through lecture, demonstration and a hands-on project.

Picture Frames & Shadow Boxes
Every piece of artwork deserves a good frame. Why not learn to make
them for yourself? You'll discover how to make custom frames and
shadow boxes for artwork or mirrors. Learn to mill wood and build
frames using the table saw and routers. Also learn techniques for
carved surface decoration, painting and finishing.

Furniture Forms: The Lamp
Lighting can significantly transform the tone of a room and the best
lamps illuminate with style and grace. In this class you'll learn all
the lamp basics from good design and safe wiring to final
construction. Students will be introduced to a range of switches and a
variety of materials for shades including rice paper and plastic.
You'll make a lamp of your own design with an emphasis on personal
expression. Prerequisite: Woodworking I
