What part of quilting do you enjoy the most?
We've had this conversation before, but it's been awhile. Really, I have two questions: 1. What technique do you like the best (appliqué, piecing, paper piecing, etc.) Why? 2. What part of the quilting process do you enjoy the most?(design, fabric selection, piecing, quilting, etc.)Why? And yes, I know the answer for some of you will be "all of the above"...but try to be a little more specific, please. (VBG) Cheers, Lynne in Toronto |

I really like the last part of the binding process. I machine stitch first
and hand stitch after I turn it. This is when I spend "quality time" with the new quilt. I get to fondle and admire and really bond with it. Then I have seperation anxiety if it is a gift. lol This is when I can really see if I did a good job. -- Sugar & Spice Quilts by Linda E http://community.webshots.com/user/frame242 |

I love quilting the most. (Hmmm... do you think that's why I'm a
longarmer??? *grin*) Design, fabric selection, and piecing are just ways to enhance the quilting. When I do get these fantasies that I have time to piece, I like regular straight piecing the best. Probably because of the speed. But I'll do just about anything by machine -- appliqué, curved seams, paper piecing, you name it. Given that I piece to have something to quilt, you might ask why I just don't stick with whole cloth? The problem is that I put that blank piece of muslin on the frame and it's so, well, *blank*! It's just too intimidating. I've done plenty starting with hand dyes, which at least gives me a starting point, but I find that blank plain fabric too stressful to do very often. Besides, if I went strictly to wholecloth, DH would question why I have half a room full of fabric. If I piece something once in a while, no questions are asked. -- Kathy A. Now I need to find a person that really enjoys the actual quilting part. I
like the piecing and planning and cutting. If I had a long arm maybe I would enjoy the quilting part more. -- Sugar & Spice Quilts by Linda E http://community.webshots.com/user/frame242 |

Can't help it, I do like all of the above (except I'm not excessively fond
of hand stitching the binding.) But each quilt seems to present an aspect I like best *in that quilt*. One might be a design challenge that turns out really well. Another might just go together so easily, or another might seem to quilt itself. The one I'm quilting right now is just sailing along, makes me wonder when the axe will fall! 1. piecing, less hassle
2. I enjoy the quilting because it's relaxing and makes such a difference on the way the quilt looks. Lynne Van wrote: We've had this conversation before, but it's been awhile. 1. What technique do you like the best (appliqué, piecing, paper
piecing, etc.) Why? I like macine piecing if it is a pattern that I can do accurately. I also love playing with the colors and motifs in the fabric to see what surprises I come up with. 2. What part of the quilting process do you enjoy the most?(design, fabric selection, piecing, quilting, etc.)Why? I love to hand quilt. After all the scraps are cleaned up, and all the stray threads are gone, I find it very soothing to sit and quilt, and watch the quilting design come to life under my needle. The rhythym of the needle is almost meditative to me. I also enjoy hand stitching the binding to the back of the quilt. I know at that stage, I am almost done, and that I am giving my labor of love its final "polish." I also have two rituals that I love to honor when I am making a quilt. First, I make sure that I use at least one piece of a fabric that was used in the last quilt I made. Since I usually work with a lot of differnet fabrics, this is never a problem. I cll it "Sourdough Quilting!" I feel that doing this establishes a continuity from one quilt to the next. My second ritual is also fun. Right before I am ready to take the very last stitch in the binding , I call someone I care about and share the moment with them. Then I get up, stretch my legs and say "Thank God THAT's over."....LMAO Kathy "Work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt....and dance like no one's watching !" |

I like piecing best, especially chain piecing when I feel like I've gotten a
lot done. I'm enjoying machine quilting more as I get better at it, too. With both of these, it is the feeling of accompishment that gives me satisfaction. As for design process, my favorite part is playing with fabric: pulling things from my stash or shopping and figuring out which pieces will do what I want. My second favorite part of designing is using the design wall - putting things up and moving them around as needed. I usually do about 2/3s of any given quilt (piecing blocks) and put it up on the wall. Then I stand back and figure out if it needs anything. At that point, I re-arrange blocks or cut more fabric or whatever, to make it work the way I want. With the design process, it is exercising my brain, and it really energizes me, and fuels my creative passion. -- Wendy http://griffinsflight.com/Quilting/quilt1.htm de-fang email address to reply "Lynne Van" wrote in message ... Howdy!
Me, too, the quilting. Technique: quilting. Process: quilting. Handquilting for me. I just love to quilt. I prefer pieced quilts because I love the fabric play.
