Duplicate Stitch
I just finished a Christmas stocking for my new son. It is red with a white
heel and toe. I would like to add his name in duplicate stitch which is something I've never done. Any tips/hints? Is there an alphabet somewhere out there on the web or can I adapt a counted cross stitch alphabet? Help, please! Thanks! Gina Beirne |

Yes. I knitted it! Can you tell I'm a new mom and running on little sleep?

I have never done duplicate stitch but my stitchin buddy Janet has done a bunch and we have discussed it. She said that you *can* use any regular counted xs chart but the stitches will be a bit longer than they are wide -- sort of tall and skinny -- and this makes your finished design elongated. This might be a problem if you are trying to reproduce a very geometric shape but for a name, I don't think it would matter at all. If you don't mind the letters being a bit longer than the chart shows, just go ahead and use a regular xs alphabet chart. I am sure there will be some duplicate stitch afficianados here who have done a bunch of it and they will likely have all sorts of other things to add. Good luck and keep us posted. The main trick to duplicate stitch is to not pull too tightly.
Don't rush it, or you'll end up distorting the knitting below your stitches. Caryn Blue Wizard Designs http://hometown.aol.com/crzy4xst/index.html Updated: 7/7/03 -- now available Dragon of the Stars View WIPs at: http://community.webshots.com/user/carynlws (Caryn's UFO's) |

Hallo Gina , Mazal Tov with you new son.
Duplicate stich , when you look at the knitted garment you will see that the knit stich ressembles a v ,,,, take your other wool or cotoon thread +needle , start it inside the knitted item, come out with needlle in the lower part of the V , pull thread through now depending if you are left or right handed , put needle through one of the upper points of the V join the knitted thread direction and come out again at the other upper point of the V, and now put needle in the under meeting point , you now duplicated a K st. now if you want the next stich just lead your needle to come out at the next Under side point of the next st you want to duplicate ,,,,,,enjoy , mirjam Yes. I can't help with the duplicate stitch, but congratulations on the birth of your son! Linda in Wappingers Falls |
