Default Sculpy Clay

When painting scuply clay is it best to undercoate it first or just
lots of little layers of the specified colour.

I am painting my first model and so far have put 4 layers of yellow on
and it is still not solid yellow like I would want.

Any advice on painting this clay would be great.

Yellow is a pretty weak color when it comes to coverage. Priming with white
gesso would help.
