Quilting Magazines

I saw a posting about Fons and Porter and that got me thinking... I
like magazines and I've seen several different quilting magazines out
there. Does anyone subscribe to any or recommend any? I'm sure that
personal style/taste dictates a bit of who likes which ones but any
general comments?

I dearly love Fons & Porter. You're quite right that personal style/taste
will make some magazines useless for you and some simply wonderful.
I need to write a love letter to F & P. I've spent a terrible amount
of $s searching for a white pen/pencil that would make fine lines and dots
on dark fabric. F & P has done it. They call it a mechanical pencil and
say it uses ceramic lead. I have no idea what that is and probably you
wouldn't want to chew on one - but by Golly, it works just great.
Meanwhile, back to the magazines, your best bet will be to buy them 'in
person' for a few issues until you decide which one(s) fit you best. Polly

My 2 favorites are Fons & Porter and Quiltmaker. I take at least 3 or 4
more, but these are my favorites.

Thanks Polly - I am gonna go look for those pens. I had
about given up on ever getting a really good white marker.

You're welcome, Cheryl. I tried mine out when I was appliqueing/thread
painting the underside of a dachshund's ear. I didn't like the first draw
and actually was able to erase the line and give it another try. Ah. How
sweet it is. Polly

I stopped buying them because of the price - almost $7 per magazine today!

you save so much on a subscription though, it's ridiculous. I just paid
for 2 years of QNM, just under 40 dollars, which is 2 dollars an issue
and Fons and Porter was 38 something, slightly less issues, so roughly 3
dollars an issue. Which makes a subscription very good value if you read
it. I think I spent more on mags in the 6 months before getting these
subscriptions than I did on the subscriptions for 2 years.

I know some people don't like the revamped QNM, but I really like it. I
had liked Fons and Porter, but the first issue I got by subscription was
a little disappointing, I'm hoping it's a one off, you can't expect to
like everything!

lol sorry, but had to chuckle.

US mags are about $15AUS here in newsagents, and got as high
as nearly $20 when the exchange rate bottomed out.

Even our local mags are about $9.




"The girls" who sew here subscribe to a lot of magazines as
a group through me. I get to run the "library" lol. ATM
we get QNM, F&P, McCall's, Quiltmaker, AQS, Australian P&Q,
DUQ, and NZQ. Others we buy if there is something
interesting in a single issue. I often get the UK magazines
if I see them as I like the European styles. And I get
Japanese magazines when I can too, as their aesthetic is
very different to our "Western" view.

It is a pleasant luxury to be able to get them all. As
individuals scattered around a rural area we would not get
to see most of these at all.

I get Fons & Porter, Quilter's Newsletter, Quilt, Quilt Almanac, McCall's
Quilting, Quick Quilts, American Patchwork & Quilting, Quiltmaker, and
Quilter's Home ... there's a reason I nommed myself "Queen of Quilting
Magazines!!" I'm really thinking that there's a few that I'm forgetting
about ...

I really can't help myself (at least, that's what I tell my hubby) ... I
HAVE to read something quilty ALL the time and mags are easily "digested"
and more portable than the average book.

I used to have subs to Australian Patchwork & Quilting, too ... loved it,
but for me, SO expensive (about $12 an issue, even with subscription).

If I had to choose my all time fave, it would be a tie between Quiltmaker
and American Patchwork & Quilting ... I love applique, especially the
"folksy" kind and they usually cater to that taste.

QNM is for *serious* quilters ... I don't think that many of their patterns
are beginner, per se. At least, not to me when *I* was starting out!!

Quilter's Home is more of a lifestyle mag than a pure quilting mag ...
usually only two patterns per ish, and focuses more on being trendy and
gossipy than artsy, IMHO.

But really, I could go on, but Polly's right -- this is a case where you
need to audition a few to get an idea of what you're looking for and what's
j-u-u-u-u-s-t right for YOU.

Some questions you should ask yourself a what's your level? Advanced?
Beginner? Intermediate? What do you like most? Applique or piecing? What
*kind* of quilts do you like best (or want to do)? Traditional? Art? Retro?
Mod? Reproduction? Amish? How much time do you want to spend on each quilt?
Some mags focus more on quilts that will take you a few hours to piece,
while others ... well, let's just say that your dance card will be filled
for a while!

So ... see ... lots of variables!!
