I'll bring some from Ottenberg's bakery! Yum. It's heaven with just a thin smear of cream cheese and pepper jelly. Last time I had black bread, it was shaped in small, rectangular loaves, and sliced very thinly. I had it with cream cheese and pepper jelly - among other things. I could make an entire meal based on it! Katherine Ah, yes, they call that snack rye here. Comes in light or dark. Very different from the big round loaves Ottenberg's is famous for, but easily available in the deli section of most of the groceries around here. IMHO cream cheese and pepper jelly can even make rye-crisp palatable and that's usually far too reminiscent of card board for me.
