Default newbie's dumb question

I took a class to learn how to make beaded watches and I want to make some
for gifts and perhaps even add a small display when I go to craft shows to
show
my 3d art.

Question: I bought a cheap watch and the beads and findings turned or lost
their color
I've already picked up some sodalite, red jasper and turquoise beads, but
the spacers
have got me stumped.

Sterling is quite expensive. What are the best options for durability of
shine, etc. I used
pewter spacers on the one I made, but I don't really like the dull color.
I've been to
a few stores and they label the findings as either metal, silverplated, gold
plated etc.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rosemarie
