Thanks Peter and Abrasha for your input.I thought it was just me getting
them!! Ive had 100 so far today. However the quickest way I find to get
rid of them is not to download them atall. I use Mail2web or Mail washer
which only downloads the headers. then I delete them from my isp
server. So much faster. Any one else have any ideas? how to deal with
this latest spamming? I think they are trying to bring the www email
service down.

Hi, Ted and Abrasha and Peter and crew,

I notice that most of you don't munge your email address when
you post. I'm constantly all over newsgroups, and have had only about
a half dozen of the evil emails lately. Could be a fluke, of course,
but I doubt it. Don't make it easy for email gathering robots!

Just pull down the full headers of your last posts and you'll see
what I'm talking about.

Cheers,

It's not necessary to block each and every domain that issues spam, but to
catch them on certain 'Rules'. I have something similar on my (non-MS/Mac)
system. That is, if MailWasher is similar.

A couple of rules that work really well for me is:
Delete From: = *msn*.
Delete From: = *microsoft*
Much of this recent load of trash never even gets to me.

Mailwasher does this. Of course you then have to click on a button to
execute the deletions from the server. I've never found that to be too
much effort. One click and it's done. I guess it's too much for some people.

You could also switch to Linux as an operating system. However, you
would then have to delete all bad e-mails. Very time consuming.

It's http://www.mailwasher.net/

And I think MailWasher is rather useless.

I had it on my PC for a month, and I still was adding domains to block that send
spam. By the time I was up to over 700 domains and still having to add new ones
every day, i decided that this was yet another useless attempt at spam blocking
software.

I am seriously considering getting a new G5!

To each his own. Is one click of the mouse too much effort?

One click on the mouse not, but entering over 700 spam servers and and key
words, and then still receiving over 100 spams a day is too much. Useless
software as far as I am concerned.

Don't make it easy for people to contact you properly, either. If
mail bounces because someone is using a munged From: or Reply-to:,
well, they don't get a second try.

Yes, but my email address is still
usable!
I always post a site link, and
I keep an easy contact-form link
on the opening page of my site.

You lose more really important business
email by using "mailto:" links on a site
than by using a form contact,
since mailto links so often fail.

I probably didn't make my explanation very clear. You only need to make
a couple of entries in a filter to block most problems.

The worm has usually been addressed as Microsoft or MSN. These two in a
filter block quite a bit. Then I also place in the filter, "mail not to
me". This blocks a ton of junk.

So when you load mailwasher, it checks your server and lists the e-mail
on the server. The ones that are filtered are already checked for you
and all you need to do is click on the process mail button. One time.

You have a choice of setting up to delete or bounce the e-mail back to
the sender. I don't bounce it, mainly because the senders address is
invalid and it then comes back to you. Just set it up to delete.

I hope this explanation makes more sense.

Here is additional nfo on the swen virus. There is also a free tool to scan
and fix your hard disks for the swen worm.

Hope this helps. Will E.

I've been getting 500 - 600 o f these viri/day for the past few days. At
around 150k each the bandwidth alone would be cripling if I were on dial-up
(many still are). I've set my mail server to reject the MS worm but if you
are on a dial-up you should download and install Mailwasher. It allows you
to preview and delete messages before you download them. It's free BTW.

folks, this is a bit off topic, but perhaps not totally, if you're jewelers

Well, that's a stretch. But this may be important.

Just a heads-up notice to be VERY careful with your email.

Today I think my incoming email, on several account names, not all of which are
widely published, was filled with many multiples of dangerous emails. And

I don't believe that's how this worm spreads. It's not spam, it uses
addresses in a victim's address list. I use a different email address for
usenet than the one I get the viri from. I get plenty of viagra offers sent
to my usenet address but most of the worms are going to my legitimate
addresses. It seems to be a measure of how clueless your online friends are
(mine seem to rate high on that scale...)

And that will stop spam how? Mailwasher will blacklist spam domains but the
problem is that spammers can use so many domains that it is a constant
battle. OSX may not run the code in the virus but it still downloads it. If
you have broadband and traffic is not an issue then the best bet is to skip
mailwasher and install a decent mailserver that will filter your email. I
only see how many I've received by checking my logs, they don't arrive in my
mail client.

It will not stop spam, but it will eliminate my computer's vulnerability to viri
that take advantage of the security leaks of the Windows OS.

There is no such mailserver, that I know of. And for some strange reason all
the ISPs refuse to do the blocking of obvious spam.

If you know of a mailserver that blocks spam effectively, I very much would like
to hear of it.
