Last time I had black bread, it was shaped in small, rectangular loaves, and
sliced very thinly. I had it with cream cheese and pepper jelly - among
other things. I could make an entire meal based on it!

Ah, yes, they call that snack rye here. Comes in light or dark. Very
different from the big round loaves Ottenberg's is famous for, but easily
available in the deli section of most of the groceries around here.
IMHO cream cheese and pepper jelly can even make rye-crisp palatable and
that's usually far too reminiscent of card board for me.
