Need advice on which Dremel tool model to buy
Howdy,
I need to do some security engraving on our camera and computer equipment. Dremel makes an engraver, but I'm thinking about getting a general Dremel tool (or something equivalent) that I can use for other things as well (little projects around the house and in the garage). Here's where I am so far: CORDED VS. CORDLESS: I'm leaning towards a corded model (cheaper, no batteries to replace, etc), and I'm assuming that the cord isn't going to be that big of an issue. SINGLE VS. VARIABLE SPEED: Not sure on this one. As I understand it, brushes have to run at a lower speed... if this is reasonably likely to be a limitation, I'd probably go for variable speed. MODEL: ??? EXTRA ATTACHMENTS (E.G. ENGRAVING BIT) ??? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Scott |

I have the corded variable speed model and I love it. I've used it for a
number of projects. One of the "bits" that I bought for it looks like a mini circular saw blade to do some cutting on a project I was building and it worked like a champ. Another item that you may look at rather than the dremel is the Foredom. The motor hangs above my workbench, all "tips", and there are several, connect to a long cord and the tool itself is controlled by a foot pedal. Much easy to control the variable speed that way rather than the dial on the Dremel. It can use all the same tips as the Dremel but the weight in your hand is much less since all you have in your hand is like a fat ball point pen. What you lose with this tool is portability. The dremel just plugs in wherever you are and you work where the Foredom needs to hang somewhere. Just depends on what all you want to do with your tool in the future as to which tool to buy.
