Quilting regulations or rules as motivators - curious
When I first started quilting back in 96, I made a rule that the maximum
UFOs I could have was 5. IOW, I wouldn't start a new project unless I finished an old one. That number kept getting higher and higher until it sort of dissapeared. I now have 12 UFO's, that's if all is accounted for! So, does anyone stick to a rule as a kind of motivator to get things done? I onced challenged myself to only use fabric from my stash. That was hard! lol I'm curious to find out how you all deal with the issue of getting quilts finished. Thanks for your imput. Carole Champlain, NY http://photos.yahoo.com/ceridwen_rhea |

I don't bother with rules. If I want to work on something new and a UFO is
waiting, I just let that UFO wait a little longer. Now, if there is a deadline on something---like the wedding quilt that needs to be given next Sunday---it has first priority and I will not let myself work on anything else until that one is finished. I have discovered that if the UFO sits there and it is sitting there because it "needs" something, like a new border idea or something like that, the idea will come to me if I just wait for it. In the meantime, it can "languish" in the UFO stack. judy in fort worth remove 4 to reply directly |

What I need is something to motivate me to finish my scrapbooks! I once
told myself "No new quilting projects until your growing-up pictures are in a scrapbook" -- but that was 2 years ago and several quilting projects later... I do try to "finish what I have" before going out looking for more... it's fun to see something get finished, so that's my motivation. --AnnP C & S wrote: When I first started quilting back in 96, I made a rule that the maximum UFOs I could have was 5. Unfinished quilts dont bother me. I think of them as head starts when a
quilt is wanted or needed quickly. Making tops is a fun process. I have given myself permission to make as many as suits my time and attention span. Is there are reason you stall out on your quilts? Perhaps a part of the process isnt fun for you, and you avoid it? Diana "C & S" wrote in message ... When I first started quilting back in 96, I made a rule that the maximum UFOs I could have was 5. I like the qualifier you have there. Does that mean you give yourself
permission to take on as many simple quilts as you feel happy doing? :-) Diana "georg" wrote in message but I'm trying to get them done before I start anything else elaborate. -georg |

Well, if something comes up with a deadline, or if I do go ahead and
make a small project to sit on the TV for the cats to perch on, or if I want to start making more HUG blocks again (which I really want to do), I can do that with a clean conscience.... Or if there's another short project I wanna do like calligraph a scroll or make a dress... But no starting something I know will take years!! One Dear Jane in process is enough. And I've badly about PIGing it while playing with the 1390, which has me mildly burned out. I MUST do something by machine next! -georg Diana Curtis wrote: I like the qualifier you have there. I usually have about 4 or 5 projects going at the same
time. That way if I get bored with one then I switch to one of the other ones. I gradually get all of them done. Sometimes if a holiday is coming up and I want to make something for a holiday or maybe right before Christmas I might have to switch to another one for a Christmas present. At the present I have 5 quilt tops that need to be quilted and I also have 3 wall hangings in progress. dreamboat "C & S" wrote in message ... I've only been quilting for just under 2 years, but so far I find when I
start a quilt, I have a definite use for it, i.e. it's for my mother or another relative, or for a specific piece of furniture. Since I am usually eager to get onto the next project, I don't start another until I've finished the one I'm working on. Right now I am working on a queen size for my mother, to go with the wallhanging I made her last year. I'm done with the piecing and sandwiching, and I've been machine quilting it for a week. I started using white thread, then decided 25% of the way through that it looked awful. I then started using transparent thread. It looks better, but then I noticed about halfway through that the tension had gone flooey, and I had to pull most of it out yesterday. I am so frustrated now that I would like nothing better than to bury this thing under the back patio, but it's for my mom, so I can't. I also swore I wouldn't start another until this was done, and dammit, I want to make a quilt for myself!! It's been 2 years--I deserve it. But I can't start it until I finish the quilt from hell!!! Anyway, that's how I get projects done. It also helps that my favorite part is hand-stitching the binding on the back. Since it's the last part, I am always eager to get to that stage, so I never have an excuse not to finish. -- Valerie in FL My quilts: http://community.webshots.com/user/vjkahler "C & S" wrote in message ... I try to work from stash, and nearly everything contains at least one piece
from the scrap basket. Mine get finished mainly because of my anal personality though, no rules needed! Roberta in D, need some rules to loosen up "C & S" wrote in message ... Of course like everyone else I have deadlines too, and of course work
to meet them and prioritize accordingly. But for the rest of the time I work on whatever makes me happy. If that means plowing through one project from beginning to end or that means working on 5 (or more) at a time...I do what makes me happy. If you aren't happy you've lost sight of the whole reason you probably started quilting in the first place. Melissa in NJ |
