Default Drunkards path retreat

Dear all

Have been fairly quiet of late -trying to finish impossible tasks with
impossible deadlines (see Aussie bed quilt update posting).

So as it has been miserably cold and I saw my neurologist at the
beginning of Feb who wasn't as positive as I would have liked (in fact
I got proper fed up after seeing him!), I got out my credit card and
have booked myself on a weekend sewing course retreat, where I have
asked to do drunkards path block by 'proper sewing' -not top sewing or
foundation piecing.
So I am off NEXT WEEKEND!-to a lovely are called Derbyshire -assuming
we don't get anymore snow......

It's quite a big step for me cos the last time I went away was 2 years
exactly and it was whilst I was away that the neurological problems
started-hardly seems possible. But as I haven't had another episode
since that one cleared up, I thought I'd risk it.

I have been out and bought LOADS of nice beige fabric for the
background. I have got a great pattern called 'Devil on the Run' from
a scrap quilt book and it basically just uses the basic drunkards path
block but set in a really interesting 16 piece block. I have bought a
couple of green and purple fabrics as I think my MIL will end up with
this one and those are the colours in her bedroom -but I know she
wants to introduce more colours as well.

So I better get downstairs and wash that fabric cos I want to cut as
much out as possiblke before I go -I always think it it is such a
waste of time to sit and iron/cut fabric when you go off for a sewing
jolly!

So I'll be back with a report after next weekend.

For all the Brits out there, I'll be travelling up the M1 to Derby
then off towards Matlock -so if I am going to be passing your doorstep
email me!

Hi Annie,

Well I'm in Nottingham and the Husqvarna Studio here is a great shop.

Am I right in thinking that there's a quilt shop in Matlock? Is the retreat
organised by them? I've not been to Matlock only Matlock Bath which is a
nice place. If you fancy some fresh air, the Heights of Abraham cable car is
quite fun.

My DH has made some mutterings about going walking in Derbyshire tomorrow
but I'm still recovering from the flu so I'm not so sure about the idea
personally.

Hope you have a great time at the retreat,

Emma

Annie, have a wonderful, relaxing time. You are the best judge of what your
body needs right now. I love the pattern you picked and of course, purple
and greens are my favorites too. I think a weekend is the perfect length of
time - you can recharge the batteries so to speak. We want a trip report,
of course. Will be thinking of you!

Hope you have a great time, Annie.
Sorry, we are a bit too far west for you this trip. I have been on a
couple of quilting weekends near here, and it is lovely - so relaxing.
Hope you can forget the neurologist meeting for a couple of days.

Hi Karen,
I found out about this one at Malvern Show last year- the lady
organising it had a stall there with a batch of leaflets. A few shops
organise them as well.
The one I am going on is organsed by Laurel Crafts:
www.laurelcrafts.co.uk
Her courses are all based in Derbyshire- so that's might be too far
for you-although she does some longer midweek ones as well. Can't
comment on what it will be like as this is my first go at it. Will
post a report next week so keep your eyes peeled.

For one not tto far from you, you might be interested in ones run by
my local shop here in Bedford -see www.sunflowerfabrics.co.uk -they go
to a really nice hotel and have the run of one of the conference
rooms. The retsuarant there has a very good reputation locally. But
it wouldn't be such a break for me to be just down the road from the
washing/ironing etc!

There is also Knuston Hall in Northampton -they run courses also but
they are a course centre that happens to run a patchwork course
amongst lots of other things so I don't know much about them.

You sometimes see info in the adverts in the P&Q magasines over here
and they are definitely becoming a bit more frequent. I know both
Wisteria Patchwork(near Lincoln) and Quilter's HAven(Suffolk) also run
them -but you have to go to a local B&B in the evening and I prefer
the idea of being able to work & play in the same place. Haven't got
their web sites to hand but you should be able to find them thro a
search machine like Google.
Must go and cut some more fabric for the weekend..........

Hullo Karen
Can I add that there are also quilting weekends organised by Jackie
Taylor of White Cottage Country Crafts, near Wolverhampton. Not a
scenic area!! but the hotel is lovely and the food superb. She usually
does three in March and three October/November. They start after lunch
Friday, and finish on Sunday afternoon (though you have to check out of
your room on Sunday morning). I have been to two. Higham Hall in
Cumbria includes patchwork courses in their residential courses.

You need to be really quick off the mark to get on one of these
courses -I have tried a few times and she gives preference to people
who go on them regularly -so by the time I have received the info the
one's I have been able to go on have already filled up!

Yes, they do fill up quickly. It's not so much that Jackie gives
preference, I think, but that those 'in the know' book the minute the
advance bookings are open. For example, it is about now that booking
for the October ones can begin. However, I got in on my first one as a
result of a cancellation. It is a gamble, though. I like them, because
you don't have to do a fixed pattern or anything - and it's very near to
me!
