terminology
this is a reply to Doug in rec.crafts.knots (Doug wrote about
"Terminology" on 2004-05-31 06:42:08 PST ) although google groups responded: "Unable to retrieve message " Hi Doug, Richard M Chisholm has tried to define these things in: http://www.allaboutknots.com/ (and has made things clear to me) the terminology suggestion for ´withstanding unraveling without load´ is: stability that is: the ability to keep shape under abnormal load/ circumstances (yank, intermittend load, snagged tail, ring loading a loop etc) distinct from: strength the resistance to breaking under excessive load (Richard Chisholm has an explanation for breakage at the knot, just outside the knot) and he points out the difference between stability and security (security: the prevention of slipping under normal load ) knotting standard to find, Ben |

Ben Thanks Ben, I read this also and found it very helpfull. However I hadn't seen these terms in formal use before and thought it might have been "The Chisholm Classification" rather than a more widely used Classification. I have also seen the term "Knot Slacking" used to describe the phenomenon but again only by one or two people. |
