Default What Happened?

This once was a site with usually excellent content. Valid and timely
comments were posted, questions that got good responses, etc.
I backed off for a personal reason, and recently returned. Cast of
characters has changed, topics as well.

I have always related the jewelry industry with a step up in values,
therefore to see gutter language on this site I am stunned. One would
not address a person interested in purchasing a piece of jewelry
asking "what the F do you want?"
To see it here is shocking, IMHO.

Where did you see that???

I've only been posting to this list for a little while, and the topics
I've joined of contributed to have been civil and polite.

I think every this has moved to Yahoo groups or web based forums.

The "f bomb" wasn't in an actual message body. it was in the little script file
used to introduce quoted text, in the recent message by "goat boy" Also known
as our dear old friend, Doc, Frosty, Juanita, etc. from the famed Halebobb web
site... Please forgive his extreme rudeness here. Not his fault, of course.
We all know goats can be rude critters...

As to where most of the dicussion has gone, it's simple.
The Orchid list hosted by Ganoksin.com, our old friend Hanuman's outstanding
site. With the passage of time, more and more new internet users never even
find out that there IS such a thing as usenet newsgroups, so fewer and fewer of
them bother to set up a newsreader. So it's the web, as you note. Of these,
the amateurs and "crafty" types often end up on Yahoo groups. Most of the more
seriously minded jewelery artists sooner or later find the orchid list on
Ganoksin. With almost 9000 subscribers worldwide at this point (maybe more,
now), Orchid has become by far the most active and significant online discussion
forum for jewelry related subjects. It's normal to get around 50 new messages
per day on Orchid. This group remains, though, mostly because I've not quit
yet, nor found another moderator (anyone want the job?), nor taken any steps to
promote it more (why would I?) Some people prefer the slower pace of knowing
there are a few readers online to refer to if they have something to discuss,
but without the task of wading through so much each day that Orchid can offer.

Cheers

I don't understand that but I too was shocked seeing it knowing that you
moderate every message.

It's not that the word doesn't slip off my tongue now and then but never
in polite company.

Use of the word in public is an immediate turn off to me. I will not
read, listen to or watch anything where that word is used more than
once. It is a bellwether of the part of contemporary culture that I
want nothing to do with.

News readers and email clients usually let you specify a couple things about
quoted text. One is a character set that preceeds each line in the quoted text.
In this message, that's the bit at the beginning of each line. The other is
the intro text for quoted messages. In this case, it's the line at the top
saying "On Mon, 03 May..." etc. In the case of the offending message in
question here, the poster set that string to be something more than just
"somebody wrote..." Presumably, all email or news messages he/she sends using
that email address or identity which are replies to another prior message, will
begin with a similar phrase until that's changed in the settings.

As to moderating the group, yes, I do. But please understand. A moderator is
NOT a censor. I'm not at total freedom to allow or reject as I please, since I
don't own this group. I'm bound to enforce only the charter requirements for
postings, and like it or not, language itself is not specified or limited.
What's limited is "personal attacks" or flame wars. You cannot use that, or
milder language if it's an attack on someone. But the use of language, pristene
or foul, is not regulated, so I don't actually have the grounds to reject a post
on that level alone.

Hopefully, "goat boy", or as you may also remember him, Doc, Dr. Memory,
Juanita, Frosty, and a few other identities, (and also volunteer substitute
moderator for me on a few occasions when I was travelling outside of internet
access), will have the kindness to edit his own message settings for future
posts. one can hope.

but don't bet on it. (grin)

Depends on just which way his usually quircky sense of humor is blowing when he
posts...

By the way, Jack, just for the record, our friendly multiple identity poster is
not only a fine jeweler, but every bit as old and crusty as you or I. This
isn't some punk kid poking his nose into the group...

cheers
