Default Machine Embroidery FUN!!

Hi Guys,
OOOO -- I am having soooo much fun with the embroidery machine -- FINALLY
:-). I know, I know -- this isn't the NG for *machine* embroidery but YOU guys
are the people I know! I certainly don't want to go tell total strangers about
the fun I am having!!!1 Anyway, I have done some little designs on tops for
the SMDGD and done kitties on a few hand towels. I have gotten several of the
embroidery cards from eBay and am off to Hobby Lobby tomorrow to get some more
rayon threads so that I can do a cornucooia on hand towels for the Powder Room.
About the only skill this type of sewing takes is to make sure you can get
the fabric hooped properly and then put the correct color in the machine --
LOL! It's quick tho' and lots of fun to watch the design appear! It's not the
type of thing I would do on something that is "special" tho'! This type of
"embroidery" (using the term very loosely) is for quickie stuff and things that
aren't meant to be of much value, IMNSHO!!
Now, for anyone out there who has an embroidery machine -- have you stitched
with the metallic threads much? I have some metallics for use in the sewing
machine but the *$*($*% things seem to break more often than I would expect.
I *know* that's the nature of the beast but I was wondering if there was a
brand of metallic sewing machine thread that holds together better than
others??? CiaoMeow ^;;^

I use some sulky, and a lot of Madeira. The secret in working with the
metallics is to sew with the metallic in the bobbin, and the neutral in the
needle. So, you have to work upside down. I use a thread that matches, that I
can see as I'm doing the stitching. For the metallic, wind it on a bobbin
normally. Then adjust the tension in the bobbin case to looser. What most
people I know do is buy a 2nd bobbin case, and mark it with nail polish - so
you know that's the one adjusted for metallics. It's just a little turn of
the tiny screw on that bobbin case to release some tension. Works like a
charm.

I also bought some of the Met--- needles (loss of memory for name here)
specifically with a bigger eye for the metallic threads. Which I use with
some of the threads when stitching thru the needle.

Trial and error, or practice. I always do some doodle sewing before working
on the real piece. My Bernina isn't a full-up embroidery machine, but it
does several embroidery stitches (heart, flower, alphabet) type patterns.

Have fun with your new toy!

I have done some stitching with metallics.
My favortite brand is Robison Anton --
http://www.robison-anton.com/main.html
They do have metallics but I have not tried them. I do have a collections of
other brands and most do tend to break more that other threads. Are you
using a metallica needle? These have a larger eye and deeper groove and my
dealer recommends them.
