Karen, is that a hand or machine knit pattern? Reminds me of a garter
carriage technique I saw a few years ago. If it's a hand knit pattern, I'm
really intrigued!

Hand knit -- for awhile, I thought I was never going to finish it. It
went much faster after I got to the point where I didn't have to look at the
pattern.

Karen the shawl is lovely and I like the kumihimo loom as well, what is
the center made out of, I have never seen a coffee can lid like that.
(Must be said I never buy our coffee in a can either)...LOL

Thanks for the postings Martin

I used to just throw the lids out with the cans, but I think I'm going to
start saving them now! Great use for them!

You do beautiful work, (((((HUG)))))

Hi Noreen,

The shawl was done in a class at my LYS, so they gave us the pattern
there -- but I did see a picture of it on the net at
http://home.interlog.com/~jamieson/kit_shadowshawl.htm .

I saw something based on the same concept in a book recently (which of
course I can't remember the name of!!). It was a scarf, a black and green
"alien" scarf -- and when you looked at it straight on, it looked like a
green and black scarf -- but when you looked at it from the side, there was
an alien face knit into it!

Cool. I've loved that technique ever since I first saw it, but balked at
the price and noise of a garter carriage. Nice to know it can be done by
hand! Is the pattern readily available? Maybe I can get my LYS to order it.

There is a place to order pattern or pattern & yarn kit at
http://home.interlog.com/~jamieson/kit_shadowshawl.htm -- my LYS had the
pattern there though, so I think it's probably readily available.

One of the things I really liked about it is that you can use different
weight yarns for a different drape and look, and still get the same shadow
effect. I used 2-ply silk & cashmere for mine, but my LYS has one hanging
in a worsted weight that looks much warmer.

Karen I think it was you who told us about the stripes and heart knitting
website. I have printed that one out so we can do it all together at a
textile meeting with Guild members.

I also saved the instructions you mailed to me. Another item on my todo
list....(smile)

Gosh that is really beautiful Karen- well done! Does it produce a thicker
fabric?

Halla is correct about the loom. You can use lids of different
sizes - whatever fits comfortably in your hand. This one is from
a 3 pound can. The bottom piece is just flat. I know you can
use two plain circles of veneer, and I suspect you could use
other material as well - it only needs to be quite smooth. The
bottom should be very slightly larger so when you pull the
threads tight you don't split the plastic lid. My friend's
husband only told me the center bits are "available." I haven't
tried to find them myself.

To me, it looks like what Eleanore's done is to take a very large coffee
can lid, cut the rim off , cut slits and a center hole, sandwich it between
two plates of wood, also with center holes, then used the brass lamp part
she mentioned as a flange at the center hole. I wonder if it looks the same
on both sides? And where do you find this nice lamp part?
