1. Protective Ornament - Dressed for Defense
By Suzanne Ramljak

Rarely do we think of jewelry as a matter of life and death. On the
contrary, ornament is typically perceived as superfluous or even
trivial. In spite of this view, jewelry and other bodily adornment can
indeed facilitate our survival in various ways. Among the many roles
that ornament performs, perhaps its most compelling is its ability to
protect us from harm....

2. Cufflinks - Sleeve Statements
By Anna Schwaderer and Christel Trimborn

Although it can do two things at once - combine form and function -
cufflinks disappeared from the world of men's shirt sleeves for a long
time. However, a new generation of cufflinks is conquering the market
and taking it by storm....

3. Swiss Jewelry Design In The 20th Century
By Jan Jansen

A representative cross-section of jewelry design in Switzerland in the
last century, entitled "The Art of Jewelry in Switzerland in the 20th
Century," was shown from June through August 2003 at the Museo Vela in
Ligornetto. Thereafter, the exhibition was shown in other large
European cities. This survey of the last century conveys an interesting
and often also surprising impression of the techniques, preferences,
and developments in the art of jewelry in a Switzerland caught on the
cusp between yesterday and tomorrow....

4. Jewels Promise Good Fortune and Health
By Peter Henselder

When the Babylonians observed the passage of the heavenly bodies across
the firmament many thousands of years ago and believed that they had
discovered the secrets of their effects on the fate of human beings,
this also marked the dawning age in which gemstones were seen as
bringers and guarantors of health and happiness. Their unusual colors
and their scarcity certainly contributed to the fact that magic powers
were attributed to gemstones in various, independent cultures as
humanity emerged....

5. Gemstone Coloration and Dyeing - Browns and Yellows
By George W. Fischer

At first consideration, it might seem poor organization to include
browns and yellows in the same chapter. However, I do this because in
some instances the same process imparts brown hues to some gemstone
varieties and yellow to others. Admittedly, brown may not be a favorite
gemstone color in nature among rockhounds and lapidaries, but the
browns imparted by some of these processes to at least some of the
gemstone varieties I have been using are attractive in cabochons made
from them....

6. Gemstone Coloration and Dyeing - The Greens
By George W. Fischer

It seems that everyone likes the greens in chemically colored gemstone.
Probably this is because greens are almost universally pleasing to the
eye. No doubt this accounts for the great popularity of naturally green
gemstone such as jade, chrysoprase, emerald, malachite, etc.
Fortunately, there are several processes that will impart green hues to
some gemstone varieties....

7. Create Multiple Gemstone Earrings Using Welding Technology
By Mark B. Mann

For this project, the No. 1 tip was used with the ABI Pulse Arc Welder.
Five tips come with the unit giving the user multiple choices for the
wide variety of welding applications commonly encountered by bench
jeweler generalists. Periodically, the electrode and ceramic collar
need reshaping....
