Default Quilt as you go

I bought myself a small book that said something about log cabin quilt as
you go and thought that would be the way for me! I have issues with
wrestling a whole quilt through my machine (issues? heck I just hate doing
it) so I thought this would be ideal!

All one does is make the squares, cut your batting and backing to the same
size as your squares, quilt the mini sandwich, have a strip of fabric to
match or contrast your backing fabric, fold it in half, take two mini
sandwiches and the strip, sew all three together, trim the seam especially
the batting out of the seam and hand stitch the flap over the seam. Done.
Next set.

I just got a magazine thank you again for the squishy that shows yet
another way of doing the quilt as you go method. I am trying this one right
now. It produces a reversible quilt with this one and less bulk at the
seams. I will let you know how that one works out if it doesn't turn into a
UFO.

I don't explain things really well but I am sure that I can unearth that
book and magazine somewhere around here. At the moment the focus is on
cleaning up all the damn broken glass in my yard and house sigh.

I love quilt as you go. You don't have all the bulk of the quilt to deal
with until you sew the last two sections together.

I like the block-by-block approach, and now pre-quilt all my applique
blocks. I love it. It makes the applique easier and very portable. And I
can get perfect grid or line quilting on my blocks no matter how big the
quilt is because I only have to work on one block at a time..

For years I was told this would not work and I just accepted that verdict.
I finally decided to test the theory and have had no problems so far. Just
because a method is "untried" or "unconventional" doesn't mean it won't
work.

I also like the reversible strip pieced block method, and this book has a
good method description.

Dig up those titles when you can. I'd like to know them. I'm also
looking forward to you reporting a comparison of the results.

Got o your County/City library and find some of Georgia
Bonesteel's books. She mastered the QAYG years ago, and has
written excellent directions. Enjoy!

Marti Michell has a new book with a slightly different variation of
quilt as you go. It's called "Machine Quilting in Sections". I was at
her 40 minute seminar at Sew Expo in Puyallup last year. She
essentially makes the center portion of the quilt and quilts only
that. Then adds the sides, one at a time and quilts those. Then adds the
borders and quilts those. I really need to get the book to understand
it better. It made sense at the time, but that was last March.

You might want to take a look at how I did a quilt in sections a couple
years ago: http://webpages.charter.net/jaccola/..._Sections.html
It sounds like what I did is similar to what Marti Mitchell is doing.

But you wouldn't have to use large pieces! You can do it with any size
blocks. I used GB's method for my first several quilts, and it worked
fine for all sorts of different sizes of blocks.
