not OT - it's not Halloween, it's Christmas!

I was expecting a few parcels to come this week but, of course, you
never know when the delivery people will actually show up, right?

First thing this morning, a UPS truck pulls up. I thought, oh goodie, my
box from J, a friend in Atlanta.

Nope, it was a blue delft item I'd bought off ebay. Very pretty addition
to my collection.

Fast forward to 2 pm and a fedex truck pulls up. Big box, heavy box.
Ooh! The box from J. Full of quilting fabric she no longer wanted, some
make up samples (J is queen of make up freebies), two pounds of
specialty coffee beans and some yummy local treats.

The quilty stuff ranges from brand new FQs never unrolled to large
pieces that would be great for backing.

It's not Halloween, it's Christmas!!

I know the feeling. I was speaking to a man the other day, about
how I had wanted to buy a pumpkin just to eat, to make soup out of....
but they are marketed here simply for carving, for Halloween. You can
still find Butternut and Acorn squashes in the stores, but not
pumpkins, which are just a large and colourful squash. He agreed that
he had missed the boat, and pumpkins disappeared on November 1st.
Well last night he came into the store and said he had found
pumpkins at a rival store, for a good price, and he wanted to give me
one. How nice is that? I was speechless, but managed to say thank
you for the present. I have a big, lovely pumpkin and I think I can
get 2 recipes out of it.
Nice people do restore my faith in humanity.

It is a nice surprise when good things come from things or times we
don't expect them, isn't it?

I never felt well enough to carve my own pumpkin this past weekend.
Poor pitiful thing is sitting amongst the fading Jack-O-Lanterns on the
front porch. Whined to mom about never carving this year and she said,
"Don't cut it up! Hold on to it until I see you Saturday and I will
pick it up and bring it home. I'd love to make pumpkin cookies and
pumpkin pie for my daughter's family!"

Thank God for mom's!

Unfortunately, most of the pumpkins sold in the US for Halloween aren't
especially good for cooking and baking. They are more watery and less
flavorful than the smaller "pie" pumpkins. I used to not carve the kids'
jack-o-lanterns until the day of Halloween. Then I wouldn't use candles
in them and the day after Halloween, the pumpkins would get cooked. But
I decided that canned pumpkin is quite inexpensive and really more
flavorful, so it wasn't worth the work to use the jack-o-lantern pumpkins.

I watched a program on WVPT last night. It was all about pumpkin and
other squash. He said that those large = giant pumpkins that people
grow for contests are extremely high in sugar content and very tastie
in various recipes, including pies. Can you imagine how many pies you
could get out of a 500 pound pumpkin? ;~)

READ the ingredients on those cans some have squash in them--not ONLY
pumpkin......
