Default International Quilting - Round Robins or Swaps

In a previous thread I asked if anyone was planning a Round Robin. There
was no response then (possibly because some participant(s) in a past RR had
failed to deliver quilts and disillusion levels were high) but I would still
like to try something.

I would love to get a group with one rep from each continent. I know
quilters in Africa, Europe, N America, and Australia (of course) - that
leaves Asia (I guess Japan would be the most obvious) and S America.

I am not sure about trying for Antarctica. Unless we had some resident
researchers who just happened to be REALLY dedicated quilters as well we
could be out of luck, and timing for RR swaps would be way out even then as
they are so isolated for the winter months. But it would certainly be an
achievement. Some web searching might help, or maybe even asking a group
with world wide associations like the AQS. Maybe an international block
swap would be easier. Any ideas on this?

The organisation required is a bit too hard for me ATM but as a long term
project maybe for next year I would like to seek the expert advice of the
group on this. Of course Continents is only one of many possible themes.
Others that spring to mind are religions of the world, professions, even age
groups (quilts made by 40-somethings, 50-somethings, etc).

Would anyone here be interested in helping organise such a venture? Or
taking part in one?

Cheryl - I don't think I"d be much good at helping organize a RR, but
I'd love to participate in one - if the rules and stuff were fully
explained and we had a "pinky swear" that the participants would all
follow through. It sounds like a lot of fun. I'm kind of intimidated by
the level of expertise in this group (I don't hold a candle), so maybe
one for the "experts" and one for the "not so experts"? I dunno - just a
thought. I'm a wee bit terrified of my not so "expert" work being
inspected.... but it still sounds like fun!!

Patti, I feel a tad intimidated myself. However, I tell myself it's all in
good fun and comradeship. I think we are more critical of our own work than
we are of others. I do not see other people's *mistakes*. They would have
to point it out, unless of course it's obvious. I think a "pinky swear" is
also in order for commitment to not being so critical of our work ;o).

I think block swaps are much easier and safer than RR. If someone
drops the ball on a block swap you can generally make a replacement.
If someone drops out of sight on a RR then the entire quilt, up to
that point, is lost. I like the idea of blocks from every continent! I
have two contacts in South America (or is Guatemala really Central
America?) Could get contacts from South America through friends there.

I have been collecting fabrics from different countries around the
world and plan to someday make an art quilt from them. The plan is to
arrange them in somewhat of a global map. I did use many of the
international fabric for a small wallhanging as a gift. It was almost
a crazy patch design because I just used small pieces. I think there
were fabrics from close to 40 countries.

I have tips on collecting fabrics from different countries but I think
I will post that under a different heading.

Cheryl:
What clever ideas you have!! I too have too much on my quilting
list for the next year, to say nothing of my RL list.
BUT ... for those who want to take this on, I would suggest a
Name RR! Examples: all Sandy or all Pat ... with variations of
course. What fun!!

I'm not sure that's possible, really.

I mean, you can, with the best of intentions, but you know stuff happens
unexpectedly.

What I'd be more interested in having people commit to would be something
like this:

*if* something comes up and your life goes to hell in a handbasket, *do*
arrange to (or to have someone close to you) notify the folks in the swap
that this is the case, and ship on what you may have received, even if you
haven't had time to work on it. We *do* understand that life throws curve
balls, and something you thought you could do three months ago may have
suddenly become impossible. All can and will be forgiven, just don't go
silent and unfindable out of embarrassment or "I'm just sure I'll find time
to do it *next* week".....week after week after week.....while things get
whacked out of schedule piling up at your place.

Everybody has times in their life when they suddenly cannot, for whatever
reason, do stuff like that; times they couldn't see coming two or three or
four months before. If it happens to hit you in the middle of a round robin
or a row robin, that's a bummer, but it can be cheerfully dealt with as long
as you're up front in letting people know that something has happened. (and
no, you don't have to say *what* has happened if it isn't something you're
comfortable sharing.)

Smile! There used to be another Marcella around so we could have a two
row quilt.

Maybe by letter of the first name...a "G" group an "M" group etc?
