Default Jellybeans - varnish

I am working on a craft where I am supposed to glue jellybeans to a
lid of a jar. I'm supposed to put varnish on the jellybeans to help
keep bugs away from the sugar of the jellybeans. However, when I put
varnish on the jellybeans, it causes the coloring of the jellybeans to
run and make a gooey mess.

Does anyone have suggestions to get around this?
