one block quilt
I have a printed block that measures 7 1/2 X 8 3/4. I'm thinking about
doing a bunch of different borders to go around the block to make it into a nice wallhanging. I'd like to do seminole, as well as a couple small plain borders, and I'd love for the border to help the rest to really dazzle. Does anyone have any suggestions, ideas, etc. that might help me? |

(Do you have a name or a nickname that we could use?) This would be my suggestion (sizes will depend on how large you want the finished WH to be): Do a first border around the block - probably unpieced. Then add triangles to each side to make a larger square, but on point. Then add a border to that - pieced. Then add a second set of triangles, to make the square back in the same orientation as the original block. Then, add a final border to that, or two borders, or another set etc ... depending on what size you want. .. In article , Mystified One writes I have a printed block that measures 7 1/2 X 8 3/4. What's the printed block like? Having multiple borders could tend to direct
the eye away from the block unless you're very careful with color and value. I'd probably use a simple inner border in a contrasting neutral (think of the inner mat on a matted and framed picture) and then keep the other borders darker and less saturated than the printed block. If the block itself is dark, I'd keep the other borders more medium neutrals. --Heidi http://community.webshots.com/user/rabbit2b "Mystified One" wrote in message ... I love the idea. This has to be my favorite way of designing quilts. I start with something, add a border, look at it, decide what it needs next and go from there. The biggest mistake I usually make is to forget blank space or calming space. I'll get so entranced with one intricate border after another that I forget that one border dazzles when it has some plain space around it of just a solid or nearly solid fabric to set it off. Can you get _Medallion Quilts: The Art and Technique of Creating Medallion Quilts, Including a Rich collection of Historic and Contemporary Examples_ by Jinny Beyer? Amazon has it listed as out of print, but you should have good luck at the library. If not, good ideas can be found in other quilt books with borders. --Lia |

Hi MO
I love Pat's idea of setting the block on-point. It will greatly increase the square inch size without adding too much "confusion" to the block. Re colors to set the block off - a quilt design program would be a great tool to have for this problem. EQ5 is great for showing how colors will work together and what elements are muted or highlighted by changing the surrounding tones. Even without that, you might find the paint program on your pc helpful. Just draw some concentric(?) squares and try different shades of the colors you want to use in the 'borders'. Good luck with your project Deena - in Philly |
