Default Sewing For Dummies

Please tell me if there is a machine to do just plain straight stiches for
doing dungarees and pants and adding patches. I am a "single Dad" with
growing kids who need hemming all the time. My own jeans too.

I have an old Singer machine but it does not seem strong enough to go
through the tough material. The "foot" does not go high enough.

Sincerely,
Jerry

Here are a couple of hints for hemming jeans with the machine you already
have:
Get a "hump jumper" tool (type that into your favorite search engine) or use
something similar to level the presser foot as it goes over the thickest
parts of jeans' hems. It makes a world of difference, I promise. Also,
when you get to those super thick parts, turn the wheel by hand for a few
stitches. Be sure to use a size 16 or 18 needle. Also, after you fold up
the hem, take a hammer (no kidding) and whack it a couple of times right on
the seams. Flattens them out for a few minutes while you sew the hem.
