They refer to modifications made to cars to make them appear to be much more than they are. Things like spoilers, large "fart can" exhaust tips, decals proclaiming features that the car doesn't really have, and so forth; things that make the car appear (in the eyes of its owner) to be "fast", but which actually do nothing to help performance, and which possibly even are detrimental to performance. Though "rice" seems like a reference to things Japanese (in reference to the fact that most of the cars that one sees being abused in such a manner are Honduhs or other Japanese trash), even a respectable American-made car can be made ricey. For example, take a look at this Mustang: http://members.impulse.net/~thebob/RiceStang.jpg ...or this Contour: http://images.cardomain.com/installs...10_14_full.jpg Proof that there are some people who should never be allowed to own Fords. Cheryl,
the terms are known in southeast TX near Houston, especially nbr. 2. but naive me...I thought the rice car terminology originally meant the rich kids whose parents could actually afford to pay Rice University tuition that "tricked" out the cars. I never made the connection to Asian manufacture. duh! The funny thing is that there are cars that were cheaper as is than doing up a Honda Civic for better performance or looks - ie a Subaru Impreza - that still did not get into the turbo sports car category on the insurance. Cheers, SpringPam "Cheryl Isaak" wrote in message ... My DS wants to know if these terms are elsewhere in the country or if it a New England thing. That looks fairly subdued to a lot of them!

rice-burner - any Japanese-made motorcyle, mid-west for several decades
riced-out - non-functional Japanese ostentation on vehicles .. . . especially Japanese-language window decals by extension I consider my VW cabriolet to be riced-out with Hello Kitty accessories and a temari antenna ball. I wouldn't call it Japanesque. I do intend to add a "usagi" decal too, eventually. Related to stitching: there's a website with the symbols for the oriental zodiac, huge charts, but they require wading through commercial material to be able to download the charts. I only had the patience to do it for Usagi. Diane Hare (usagi = hare, only colloquially bunny) |

There was even a "Japanesque" line of Hello Kitty products from Sanrio (owns Hello Kitty, etc.). I have the teapot and rice bowl and chopstitcks, etc. They feature temari balls as the main decorative motif and also have wee bunnies (double bonus!). If anyone wanted to call the Hello-Kittyfying + temari-ing + kusudama-ing of my cabriolet "Japanesque", I wouldn't quibble about it, but I don't call it that myself. temari on http://www.portcommodore.com/diane I need to add the kusudama Diane Hare |
