Default Crochet: Moccasin-style slippers?

My husband is a fan of moccasin-style slippers for around-the-house
wearing. I'd like to crochet him a set that can be washed, so I'll
probably be using a cotton or acrylic yarn of some sort. What I need is
a pattern so I can decide which kind of yarn to start buying up for the
project.

My biggest problem so far is that most slipper patterns I'm finding are
actually big, bulky sock sorts of things that look like they're for pre-
teen girls. I'm sure he'd be touched at my adding personalized
embellishments to his slippers, but I think even he would draw the line
at pom-poms on the toes or ribbons 'round the cuffs.

Does anyone have a pattern they could share or direct me to for manly-
style slippers? I could probably figure out how to alter even a pair of
mule-style slippers to cover the back half of his foot a la moccasin.

I bought a little booklet in the yarn section of the Kmart the last
time I was in the US. It's called "Creature Comforts" by Red Heart.
It's entirely slipper patterns, and the first one, called Simply
Slippers, sounds like what you want.

Also, a woman in my town in Italy makes a simple moccasin slipper,
with a collar, out of granny squares. The diagonal of the granny
square has to be about half the length of the foot. Since they're
stretchy, a little less will do. Using basic geometry and algebra, I
found that the side of each square should be the length of the foot
divided by 2.828. If I round this to 3, the square will be a little
smaller, which should work out fine. So measure the foot and divide
it by 3 to get the size of the square. If the foot is twelve inches,
you will want to make 4-inch squares.

You need to make eight squares for each slipper. It's going to be hard
to explain how you join them, but I'll try.

Sew four of the squares into a big square. Spread it so it's in a
diamond shape. Starting with the top, number the squares going
clockwise, so that the top square is square 1 and the leftmost square
is square 4. Lay square 5 on top of square 1 (the top of the diamond)
and sew them together along the 2 outside edges. Lay square 6 on
square 3 (the bottom of the diamond) and sew together along the outer
edges. Now you still have a diamond, but the top and bottom squares
are double thickness. Fold the outer points of squares 2 and 4 (the
right and left squares) into the center and sew their top edges to the
free edges of square 5 (at the top of the diamond).

Now you attach the remaining 2 squares as follows Sew one edge of
square 7 to the only remaining free edge of square 2. Sew one edge of
square 8 to the only remaining free edge of square 4. Sew the bottom
edge of square 7 to the nearest free edge of square 6 and the bottom
edge of square 8 to the remaining free edge of square 6. You might
want to work a decorative edge to the opening. Fold back the collar
and you have a cute slipper.

I have to say that the slipper in the Creature Comforts booklet, since
it's all single crochet, works up denser and looks like it's meant to
be walked in. However, I had to modify it slightly as I went along to
make it fit my foot, even though I had chosen the right size according
to the guage. (I think I added several rounds in height.)

The granny square slipper doesn't look as sturdy. It would be fine as
a bed slipper or while you're sitting in a chair reading. If you make
the squares with a dense stitch, it would be sturdier.

Hi Threnody,

There is a House of White Birches booklet called Big Book of Slippers
and they are all crocheted. There is a pair called Men's Classic and
one Slippers for Dad. The copyright is 1997 so I don't no if it's still
available.

Hugs,

Nora

Thanks! It did help. Now I'm off and running. I refined my Google
search and got some other links besides, so I can choose which pattern I
like most.

You'd think a computer geek would know how to use Google, huh? But for
some reason I was being goofy and forgetting to add/subtract the keywords
that would help me most.
