Default Bizarro World OT Story from Sooz

My mom is doing freakingly much better. That's good news!

But the world is WEIRD! Get this:

~ We have to go over the San Francisco Bay Bridge (not the Golden Gate Bridge)
to get to my mom. We weren't planning on going Friday (I couldn't drive that
far 2 days in a row, which I'd already done!). But someone else had big
plans.....

This poor distraught guy stopped his red BMW mid-span, climbed out, and crawled
over the side. He didn't jump -- that would've tied up traffic for only a
couple of hours. No, he hung out there -- cutting himself, writing on the
bridge supports with his blood, refusing to come up -- for over 12 hours.

The emergency workers couldn't rappel down to him -- he had a sharp thingie
(used to cut his flesh) that could have sliced through the rappel line and
plunged the cop to his death. Cops, paramedics, fireworkers, even the Coast
Guard congregated for the entire ordeal. They closed 2 lanes of traffic on the
bridge. But they might as well have closed all but one, because everyone had
to rubberneck. And you just *know* that some ghouls drove out there just to
look.

It was taking 5 hours to drive over the bridge from our neck of the woods into
San Francisco. Traffic was rerouted to the other bridges in the Bay
Area......there are two main bridges besides that one (within fathomable
driving distance), and yes, they were jammed with cars too, from the overload
of usual traffic. It was a huge, huge mess.
(The only time I've seen things weirder was during the 1989 earthquake, when
things just STOPPED in the Bay Area -- no mail service, no power, nothing.)

The guy finally tired after 12 hours without food, and 12 hours *with* drama,
that they were able to grab him. WHY didn't he do this at home -- just him and
a bottle of pills? If he had to have a drama, he could've called all his
friends. As it was, he wreaked havoc on the entire Bay Area. I do feel sorry
for him, but it was the most selfish act I've seen in.....a while.

~ Next Bizarro World stop? ---My mom's hospital room. Don't worry; it's a fun
story, not an icky or sad one.

My mom's roommate in the hospital is ---my best-friend-in-high-school's MOM. I
haven't seen this woman in 32 years!! I haven't seen my BFIHS for 30!!!! It
was pretty wow.

We had to leave before my BFIHS came for a visit to her mom. I'm going to call
my mom today, and even though Mom can't say much without her roomie
overhearing, I can ask yes-or-no questions. I'm so curious!

glad to hear that your mother is doing better, Sooz.

and that guy sounds like a real friggin nut. he probably had no real
intention of killing himself..there are people who, sick as it is, do
things like that purely for attention. they live for the drama, and
will do anything to be in the middle of it all. or perhaps he did mean
to do it, but lost his nerve once he got to the bridge. who knows.
some people are just plain crazy.

Yes! I am! She was really funny, smart, and had the best laugh in the world.
We drifted apart because she started having kids right out of high school, and
my world was poles apart from that reality.

But now! Who knows? One funny note -- I married a guy 19 years younger than
me. She's married to a guy 20 years older than she is. So our husbands are 40
years apart! Anyway......I'm intrigued by the possibilities of friendship.

I'm thinking spoiled adrenaline junkie. Great car, great bridge -- GREAT rush.
I wonder if there will be any follow-up stories in the newspapers. I'll pass
them along here if I see any more on him......

Mom goes home TODAY!!

I'd love to run into a couple of my old bestest friends, especially
Gary of "The Monkees" fame (a little background story for another time
maybe?). I couldn't have made through 4 years of art in high school
without his inspiration.

Who is this guy? What's the STORY?!?
