Default Hardanger Twisted Bars revisted

A few weeks ago I posted the following query:

I decided to try my hand at some Hardanger and so have been working my
second project which is the Hardanger Box Lid Design of May/June 2003

by
Roz Watnemo http://www.nordicneedle.com/free/2003_05/index.shtml .
I've been doing it in DMC 504 Perle Cotton #5 and white #8 on moss

green
Lugana. I've thoroughly enjoyed working the piece and learning the new

stitches.

My question is regarding the center 'flower' motif that calls for
twisted bars in the elongated rectangles surrounding the center Kloster

block. I have stitch diagrams for squares with the twisted bar
stitching, but am not sure how to apply that to a long rectangle. I
can't tell from the photograph how to work the stitch, so wondered if
anyone had tried a stitch such as this before and could give some
advice. The pattern only says to work twisted bars in this section, no

diagrams.

I found the diagram at
http://www.classicstitches.com/know_...o ssary&let=T
for "twisted bars" but couldn't understand how to apply this to the

project. I tried writing to Nordic Needle for advice and what they
described didn't make sense when I consulted the above diagram. It
wasn't until I bought a copy of _Advanced Charted Hardanger Embroidery_
yesterday that I found a picture of what the Nordic Needle folks call
"twisted bars" is actually stitched like the "interlaced hemstitch" at
http://www.classicstitches.com/know_...o ssary&let=I
*without* the hemstitched border at the top and bottom of the drawn

thread area.

*Now* it all makes sense and I think I'll be able to finish up the piece
fairly easily now.

Thought I would pass it on in case anyone else has the same trouble.

Cheers,
--

Laury

Oh my! I am sorry that I missed your original post! I probably could have
help with that one! I have done a couple of pieces that have the interlaced
hemstitch, and they have also been referred to as twisted bars in other
places....

I am glad that you persevered and figured it out! I am sure that your
project has turned out beautifully!

Gosh, I wish you had too! I hope to get time either tomorrow or on Tuesday to finish it up. I may
decided to redo the woven bars as my first couple didn't turn out as well as the last two.

Cheers,

Laury

Yesterday I went through a few books, wrote all the in formation down,
brought it to my computer. Well, somehow that paper is lost, but I do
remember what I wrote, just might get a name spelled wrong:

Dillmont illustrates and explains the stitch, using ribbon and thread,
but does not name it.
Thomas calls it "twisted border"
Bryson calls it "twisted bar"
Ilse Ather illustrates but doesn't name it.

So, obviously, there are differences in what to call it, if you call it
anything at all. g
