Have you tried an encyclopedia? If not the good, old-fashioned paper
sort, then one of the on-line ones such as

http://en.wikipedia.org

Hint: Searching for "adhesive" will get you more information that
searching for "glue."

Additional information about a large variety of adhesives can be found he

http://www.thistothat.com/

(a very nifty resource, by the way, when you don't know what kind of
adhesive to use for a particular project or material).

Glue sticks aren't glues in the truest sense of the word, they're a
class of materials called "hot melt adhesives" by the people wo make
them. This is more than you want to know but hot melts are complicated
materials, so here goes:

Hot melt adhesives are really plastics. Most hot melts are polyolefins.

Polyolefins are a family of plastics which are made by using stringing
together olecules of proplyene and ethylene into long chains, or
polymers. Proplyene and ethylene are both gasses, so the process
requires high temperature and pressure.

Some of the most familiar polyolefins are polyethylene (milk jugs,
plastic sheeting, etc.), polypropylene (liquid detergent jugs, other
containers),etc. There are many other types of polyolefins, including
glue sticks.

Glue sticks are made by heating the polyolefin untill it melts, and then
forcing it through a chilled tube to form sticks. The sticks are then
cut to length and packaged for sale.

If you want to know more, you can go to www.Google.com or Yahoo.com and
type in
"hot melt glue", including the quotation marks. Don't try to search
under "adhesives", that category covers too many types of products -
you'll get about 100,000 links.

Good answer Barry!

We use totally different types of glue sticks for different purposes.
Some are nothing like what is commonly used or for hobby use.

One of the glue sticks my uncle uses requires very high heat to melt
and high pressure equipment to eject the semi-solid liquid. It will
'after-cured' withstand over 3,000 degrees farenheit for extended
periods of time without failing. Provided of course it is used and
placed correctly.
Hobby type glue sticks 'melt' at very low temperatures, often between
210 and 350 degrees. Try using that to hold a smelting pot together,
hi hi....
