Default AAAaaaaa!!!!.. I'm a few yards short on yarn to finish...

I was making a cardigan for my daughter. All is done except button/
buttonhole band (one piece around the neck) and I'm out of yarn!
It was a bag of yarn from ebay, so no way I can find this exactly
thing even partial skein (or is there hope?). My calculation was tight
but optimistic, too optimistic...
Somehow I lost track of number of skeins in the middle because we were
moving. Now I turned over all the boxed yarn again and again. Seems
like it WAS the last skein.

What are the suggestions please?

It's made in one color, cuffs, bottom and band should be done in 1x1
rib knit.
So far I came up with two possibilities:
1.I may add something completely different for the band and then do
some simple embroidery thread along the rib knits. Hmmm... will
probably look like I ran out of yarn at the end...
2. I may cut yarn somewhere at the end of the cuffs/bottom rib knit,
pull out yarn from couple of rows of each, making them shorter, graft
what's left and use pulled out yarn to finish the band. That leaves me
with single color and same yarn all over, although band will be made
with knots/joins (may be not the best place to join yarn a few
times...), and technically challenging.

Any other ideas????

I am not a knitter.. and so I may not have a good idea at all.. but if it is
long sleeved.. could you make it short sleeved and have enough yarn to
finish the project? Or even make it 3/4 sleeves?

Thanks Cheryl,

it is 3/4 sleeve and it doesn't make sense to make sleeves shorter:
it's supposed to be warm cardigan....

Pull out cuffs and make contrast collar (button band)and cuffs.

Depending on the style, if it's plain I would probably buy a matching tweedy
yarn and do the cuffs, bottom band and button band in the tweed. Then you
could make patches for the elbows and pockets in the tweed to pull it all
together. You could even add a collar in the tweed.

Ask me how I know that works? I'm sure you can figure out that I've had the
same problem in the past and that's how I solved it.

Don't look at it as a problem. Look at it as a creative opportunity.

I often use a contrast FANCY yarn on my GD cardigans, scarves, or whatever.

I used a contrast on GS's jacket once and knitted a little car in the same
yarn, sewed it on the front...very cute.

YULIA
If you look in the mags now it is very Contemporary to have 2
different colored sleeves ,,,
but i understand you don`t like it this idea ,,,
If have you knitted it from the bottom up i would advice unraveling a
bit of the top ,,, add another color and knit 2 rows of the new color
after one row of the original color ,, if it is a Raglan , do it in
the round !!!!
than do the same for the Sleeve ribbed end !!!
If you knitted top down you can make same idea at the bottom of the
sweater ,,
best of luck NOW you are using your creativity !!!!

Oh I feel your pain! What if you skipped the button band altogether and
inserted a zipper? Or knit a little i-cord and tie it together at the top?
Here's one I just completed:
