Default what to do with the 6x6 squares

Someone had mentioned that it would take a long time to get enough squares
to make our own afghan. A response to this was that we could make pillows
with the squares we received. (Sorry, I don't remember who made these
comments.) I had been thinking that for every 2 squares we send out, we
should make the same 2 squares for ourselves. That way, we would more
quickly increase the number of squares we have and also have a "record" of
the squares we sent out.

Of course, I haven't done this. ;-)

That's a great idea Janise! I think I will do just that.

I have thought of something like that too!
There are many things, smaller than an afghan, to use them for!
I have thought about a vest or something "cosy" in the winter!
Then you all will warm me! I love that thought!LOL!

Hi Janise,

I was the one who commented that it would take more than three years to
get an afghan at the rate of 2 squares a month. That's a great idea to
make two identical squares for ourselves. That would bring it down to a
little over a year and a half. I don't know if we can keep it going for
that long without duplicating partners. If we duplicate partners, we'll
have to keep good records of what we sent to whom! I think Cher
originally estimated that we could keep it up for about 9 months without
duplications.

Barbara

But even if we duplicate partners, chances are we might not get the same
pattern and/or color in the future. I didn't think about keeping track of
what I sent to whom, but now that you mention it, I think that's a good
idea, and I will do that now.
I try and change with every 6 x 6 square done -- but wouldn't it be just
luck to go back to a previously done pattern and have it go to the same
person that got it the first time.

For myself, I don't really care how long it takes to get an afghan -- just
putting one together regardless of size and knowing there's a person and
place behind each of the squares will be cool. The pillow and vest ideas
are good ones as well.

Janise, that's exactly what I did when in a couple of other square exchanges
(make up 2 for me each time I sent some out). Besides, if you're not in
that big a hurry for your afghan (or whatever), it's quite surprising how
quickly they add up. I have a small afghan made from squares I've received,
and have more squares waiting for borders and to be added to the afghan. I
work on the afghan when I'm between other projects, or need a break from
what I'm doing. Some of you have seen my afghan on my Yahoo photo site.
I'll give you the link again to give anyone who hasn't seen it an idea of
what a friendship afghan can look like. http://tinyurl.com/o9ga Also,
please feel free to look at the other pictures of my projects!

Hi everyone,

I just started putting borders on some very old exchange squares to put them
into some kind of form. I may just add the squares we are swapping now to
the mix to have enough for something. Also on the other exchange we
exchanged more often than once a month which helped to build the square
stash. (Not suggesting this for this group since you all sound like you are
very busy people and may not want to exchange more often)

Here are some suggestions I have that might work for some. Vests, instead
of a traditional square afghan to cover a bed I might make a triangle afghan
of 16 to 19 squares as a throw. My mil has one and I found it interesting.
Wall hangings, purses. I just love squares because they are so versitile!

Happy crafting,
Corine
