Hi! Question about copyright laws
Hi! I'm new here. This looks like a great group. I just have a question
about copyright. I noticed that someone was thinking about recreating famous artwork into embroidery patterns. Is there a copyright issue? I would love to turn some of my favorite art into cross stitch patterns for resale, but I'm not sure if I would be committing copyright infringement. Any ideas? Thanks |

If the piece you are looking to turn into a pattern is under copyright, then yes, you would be infringing on it. If it's in the public domain or if you obtain permission from the copyright holder, then you're all set. I noticed that someone was thinking about recreating
famous artwork into embroidery patterns. Is there a copyright issue? In addition to what earlier replies said, sometimes famous works of art are copyrighted by the museum they reside in. For instance, the Louvre (as far as I am aware) owns all rights to The Mona Lisa, so you'd have to obtain their permission and probably enter into a licensing agreement (as in you have to pay them) to use the image. Before you venture forth into this new line of charts, you might want to try one on your own. Import an image you like, work to make it stitchable, and then stitch at least a significant portion of it yourself. Make sure that it's something you enjoy doing (personally all that tedious clean up of imported images makes me nuts after a few hrs, and a good translation takes many many hours), and make sure that what you plan to sell will be enjoyable for others to stitch. To get detail out of a picture, the end Xst project will probably be fairly large, another thing to keep in mind. Too many people rush their charts and produce total crap (too much confetti and/or too little detail), most of which seems to turn up on Ebay. In addition to what earlier replies said, sometimes famous works of art are
copyrighted by the museum they reside i BRBR What museums have isn't copyright, it's ownership rights, which includes the right to display, though the end result is the same -- you still need their permission to make a copy. Also, if you are working from a photograph, though the *content* could be public domain, the photograph itself is probably still covered by a separate copyright, so you need the photographer's (or other copyright owner's) permission to use it. So, do your research before you put the effort into trying to make charts. Best, Annie |

Thanks to everyone who answered my question. I am working on my own
patterns right now. I've been working on a large one for a couple weeks. Fine tuning the chart and such. I'm planning on selling the chart or kit on Ebay. Does anyone know a better way? I figured I'd start there, but if there's a better way, I'm all for it Thanks a lot |
