Haing sorted out the type of tree when do you start decorating for
christmas. I do it on or around the 8th of December, we always were
off school on that day and my Mum let us get the stuff down from the
attic and start.

Ours being a pagan household, we start with the Sun Return wreath on
the Sunday after Thanksgiving (four Sundays -before- Solstice). This
has four beeswax candles and a large sun-shaped candle in the center.
Each week on Sunday we light an additional candle, and read one of the
many Sun myths. The center candle is lit on Solstice. (Yes, this is a
take-off on the Advent Wreath...) Hot beverages and treats are
consumed then as well.

The Yule Tree is brought in the Friday before Solstice, the lights are
put on it on Saturday, and we decorate it on Sunday. (With my having
Fibro, I've learned that trying to do it in one evening is too much
work.)

The Yule log (a birch log with 3 candles since we have a gas-log
fireplace) is set up on Solstice and lit every evening for the next 12
days...

Tree comes down the day after Twelth Night. If we have to take the
tree down prior to that day, we keep at least a wreath in the house.
Traditionally, one is not supposed to remove the greenery until that
time.

The in addition to the cerdar/fir/pine the traditional greens that
must be in the house include holly, ivy, mistletoe, rosemary, myrtle,
and bay.
