Dear Jane quilt
Okay. My Giant Dahlia is finished and given to its new owners. Good
riddance. I'm ready for my next 3+ year project, so I have ordered the Dear Jane book, software, and templates. My only problem, so far, is that I can't decide on my fabric choices. I will definitely be doing batik with a black sateen as a background color. However, do I use up some of my out of control batik stash, or should I purchase a large piece of just one new batik? Tutu's DJ's are so striking in just the two colors, but I don't know if just two fabrics can hold my interest that long. It does occur to me that I can choose the same colors as the original quilt, just use batiks instead. I want this to be a handwork project that I can drag along with me on our travels this summer. So far I will be out of my beloved home for three weeks, but knowing DH I can plan on at least one more. I will be making the pilgrimmage to the Bennington Museum to see the original this fall. I can't wait. Any opinions? I know a few of my fellow quilters have opinions, and are usually happy to share them. TIA. Hopefully the book will take a few days to arrive, so I can whip out a few quickies and get a handle on my secondary stash. (Stuff I don't love anymore, but needs to be used up.) A friend has made several Dear Jane's (she teaches a class so has one
under construction to show students) Her first one was all brights and white, her second was all civil war reproduction and a third one is navy background and a multicolor batik. She also made a partial quilt from 30's prints enlarging the blocks to 6". All are beautiful. Because the batik is a multicolor it really isn't a two color quilt. Using two colors saves time choosing fabrics but if you have other colors why not "go for it". It will make you feel good to use some of that stash. My friend pre-cut each block and put the pieces in individual sandwich bags. Just make sure you purchase a little extra background fabric. So far I have resisted the urge to start a Dear Jane. Who knows how long I can hold out. Susan On Tue, 18 May 2004 12:35:52 GMT, "JS" wrote: Okay. My Giant Dahlia is finished and given to its new owners. Good riddance. I would love to make a DJ quilt out of jewel tone batiks but I have to
finish other hand projects first. -- Mary http://community.webshots.com/user/mardor1948 "JS" wrote in message om... Okay. My Giant Dahlia is finished and given to its new owners. Good riddance. Hullo Jennifer
If you look carefully at the picture of the original - or even the original itself if you get to see it before you start! - you will notice that the colours are placed almost in a Trip Around the World fashion - ie in rows around a centre. This is the way I am doing mine, too. You could do the same with your black background. If you chose six batiks (plus one small bit for the centre I think - have I got my counting right?), to be placed around the central block, you would have the principle of the original in terms of colour, but completely different because of the opposite extreme of background. The reason it isn't as obvious as might be, is that some of the colours have faded more than others. .. In article , JS writes Okay. My Giant Dahlia is finished and given to its new owners. You name it, they are trying to do it. I signed up as a block of the month kit, so most color choices are taken from me. They seem to be using Thimbleberries mixed with Civil War repro to get a washed out tone. If the fabric is too folky or not contrastng enough, I am swapping in my own Civil War repro collection (I've got 4! lol). I've also been doing them in order, because that's how the BOM works. I cut each block and stuff it in a sandwhich bag with any extra instructions or templates and label the bag with the block name. Triangles don't fit in the sandwhich bags, but I'm stuffing them in there anyway. IT's easier to have a box of bags with all the blocks in. I'm not sure how I'll handle the sashing, but I think that'll be done in the same colors for the whole quilt (no, I won't use lime green, turquoise or pink for it). I am sewing the blocks by hand in front of my computer, primarily, but they travel nicely as an in-hand project. I like the scrappier look myself. If I could have chosen the colors, I'd have aimed at a Trip Around The World pattern of colors, and if you see the quilt in person, you will note that Jane DID that with a color scheme of 6. I can't imagine wanting to do a Dear Jane more than once. But I am enjoying the project. -georg 16 blocks, 2.5 triangles, god knows how many pieces. |

Well, I did mine scrappy. It takes a LOT of fabric and I figured that if I did
scrappy I didn't have to buy it all at once. Hand piecing does take a bit more fabric for some reason. And remember to make the seam allowances around the outside a bit larger than 1/4" so that you can trim to size. The Dear Jane list has more info on fabric amounts and such. It seems to me that the black sateen would have more than the average amount
of "give" and the batiks would not. Wonder if that would be a problem? We found a good use for my sateen collection when we were housebreaking the Yorkie. IMHO. Yeah, sure. Really not feeling grumpy, just thought I would raise the question. Polly "Pati Cook" wrote in message ... Well, I did mine scrappy. I've used my black sateen in several quilts so far, with great results. It
has a little bit more shine than the other blacks I have used, and it is so soft. I bought an entire bolt last time I had a 50% off coupon at TSWLTH, and I have used quite a bit of it. I've also used white sateen in a couple of pieces with nice results. Quilting shows up a little bit more, too. Jennifer in Florida "Polly Esther" wrote in message link.net...
