omebody told me it's because it confuses the cows! ROFL

Well, it sure as heck confuses me! And I've heard of more than one irate truck
driver that has arrived at a delivery site before the place is open because
they didn't realize the different time!

There is a road sign in Indiana along I-80. It is even more complex
there since part of Indiana observes daylight savings time and part does
not. Listening to radio ads which give the hours of operation for a
business along the time border is somewhat confusing to those of us just
passing through. It has been too many years (over 30) since I crossed
into mountain time via road so I don't know if there are signs that way.

I have never seen a road sign telling about a timezone change. If you fly,
the pilot will tell you what the local time is when you are landing. .
There was a book written fairly recently called Time Lord, telling the
story of Sir Sanford Fleming, who invented Standard Time. He was a Scotsmen
who came to Canada as a very young man, and worked as a railway surveyor
and engineer. He played a major role in building the Canadian Pacific
Railway--the railway to the Pacific shore--and as a result of this had to
think about the problem of time. Then each community set its own time by
where the sun was. Scheduling trains was chaotic. So he thought of a
system that would make time regular and predictable across large distances.
What he came up with is the basis of time zones as they are now used.
It is interesting to think that something we take for granted like this
system of time was invented by someone. Of course it had to be--but what a
creative mind that first came up with it!

That was another furor in the last election from Florida. No problems
between political parties, but the hours the election precincts were open
varied by the time zone. So the folks in Central closed at 8pm Eastern time,
( but still 7pm their time), by which time the media were announcing their
predictions, based on the poll closings in the eastern zone. Consequently
many people didn't bother to go to vote when they heard that Mr A or Ms B
was predicted the winner. Something that needs adjusting!!.

We used to have the same problem in Canada. Now the polls in the
east open late and close late, and in the west they open early and close
early. I hope I have got that the right way round. Anyhow, over 6 time
zones, the polls open and close at the same time. Except the first time
we tried it one Province (Saskatchewan?) was or was not on daylight saving
time, and so was not in synch with the rest of the country..

That is so true, Sue! My sister got her Masters at Indiana State. When she
first told me about the group of counties that don't observe daylight savings
time, I thought she was kidding. It even made the TV Guide tough to figure out
at first! LOL

Same here in Indiana- the state is on two different time zones or doesn't
follow daylight savings- it's totally stupid when you are going to travel to
another part of the same state that you have to think whether they are on the
same time as you are!

most of the country is on Daylight Savings Time, which means
you move your watch forward one hour in the spring, and back one hour in
the fall. Saskatchewan doesn't do this. (And this is a major political
issue!!)

It makes economic sense. The state as a whole doesn't observe Daylight
Savings time, but neighboring states do. The northern areas which
border Chicago and are economically dependent on it follow Chicago time
and the southern parts which are economically tied to Louisville stay on
Louisville time.

Not to argue with you or anything (the debate has been going on in the
legislature for YEARS!) but I live in the northern part of IN, and in the
summer, we are with New York and in the winter with Chicago. That doesn't make
any kind of sense to me- economic or otherwise!

Ruby wrote regarding polling stations:

Must have missed that, how early do they open in BC??? I was aware
that the results are not to be reported until all the poles close. I
hadn't noticed any time change in this area???

I'm not sure I have, either........seems to me the last general election
they were open 7am to 7pm. Is that different from elsewhere?

Sheena commented:
I believe the two major television networks are agreed that each time
zone will not come on air in the next time zone until that one has
closed it's polls.

I thought it was the whole country, so that the news starts to filter in
here at 10pm Eastern/7 Pacific.

Thus, BC is last to see what we already know here
in the east if the computer has called an election by the time the
polls in Ontario close.

I am resisting the urge to say, who cares anyway. All politicians,
and their parties, look pretty much the same to me now, atrocious.

And I am resisting the urge to agree and *then* say that Ontario and Quebec
have so many seats that it doesn't seem to matter what happens anywhere
else!

It sounds very cumbersome, Mirjam, but one gets used to it and it works very
well.
For instance when TV programmes are pre-advertised (on TV) the time is
always listed as something like "11pm Eastern/8 Pacific"

The thing I found most difficult to becom accustomed to was the vast
distances, such as the size of the prairies. Basically you can drive non
stop for two long days and it's almost completely flat. Not
boring..........it has its own beauty.........just FLAT.

Seems to me that I have.......saying we were entering the Mountain Time
zone. Need an Albertan to say for sure!

I can remember a conversation I overheard from the kitchen between my two
sisters when they were pre-teen. Youngest sister sits and reads a book. Then
asks the other sister "What does Mountain Time mean?". Says the older sister
"That is when all the bears find a cave over there and go asleep for the
winter."

Smart sis... LOL
