New Newsgroup
Please forgive the X-post, but trying to get this new newsgroup
working. It's not that I don't like your newsgroup, actually its very interesting. I just think there oughta be an unmoderated one as well. It's just the rebel/anarchist in me. Thanx! Frosty SilverMan -- Real debate; No bull****. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hale_Bobb/ & http://halebobb.com |

Frosty SilverMan -- Real debate; No bull****. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hale_Bobb/ That's not a newsgroup. That's a web board run by Yahoo. Yes, and that board's mention is merely part of his sig file. I think what he's referring to was the other newsgroup to which the post was, as suggested by his first sentence, cross posted to, alt.rec.crafts.jewelry. I haven't checked to see whether there is in fact such a group, and wonder what steps the poster has taken to get one established. Alt groups are easierto get started than groups in the big eight hierarchies, but it takes certain formal steps to do. And then, presumably, one needs people to take advantage ofit in order for it to amount to anything useful. In the case of this alt group, if it becomes established and known, it might be useful, or might suffer the fate this group seemed headed for when users voted to have it converted into a moderated group back in '97, and that was an ever increasing flood of advertising. Back then, ebay wasn't what it is now, and I'll bet if this alt group does indeed get established, it will quickly become little more than an advertising board for ebay ads. or maybe not. perhaps I'm being too much of a cynic. cheers Peter |

I haven't checked to see whether there is in fact such a group, and wonder what steps the poster has taken to get one established. Alt groups are easier to get started than groups in the big eight hierarchies, but it takes certain formal steps to do. And then, presumably, one needs people to take advantage of it in order for it to amount to anything useful. I sent a "control post" as one must to create a newsgroup. In the case of this alt group, if it becomes established and known, it might be useful, or might suffer the fate this group seemed headed for when usersvoted to have it converted into a moderated group back in '97, and that was anever increasing flood of advertising. No, you're probably correct. It's be a place with lots of spam. Such is the nature of the alt.hierachy. While in theory, this is all that's needed to create an Alt newsgroup, now your task is to convince news administrators to carry it on their servers. That's the hard part. You may need to send that control message several times. And it will help (perhaps a lot, from what I've read) to also propose/defend/justify the proposed new group on alt.config (I think that's the one. do some homework to be sure...) Also, if you can find public news servers (not just your own, if you have one) who have picked it up, be sure messages to that group get posted there. it will help in convincing other news admins that there is indeed traffic, and therefor some reason to get off their butts and add the group. Although no formal vote or similar structured creation process is needed in the Alt heirarchy, you still have to jump through the human loops of getting news admins, often overworked and sometimes underskilled people, to get on board. It's not as automatic as one might wish. You are aware, I'm sure, that there are already a few somewhat related groups, such as pdaxs.ads.jewelry, alt.diamonds and alt.diamonds.marketplace, alt.folklore.gemstones, free.uk.jewelry, and perhaps others I'm not awareof, for which jewelry related postings are on topic. And of course, though it's not jewelry specific, there's also both the big eight version and the alt version of rec.crafts.metalworking, one of the busier and more useful newsgroups outthere (well worth your time, folks, if you've not found it before. Someone even set up a web site for it. Lots of home shop machinists, but also many more skill sets to be found there...) peter |
