Default Need Crochet Help! Going nuts over pattern

I was surfing the net tonight and came across this cute pattern. I started
to try it out (just a test sample) but I'm beginning to think the pattern is
wrong. Either that or I'm reading it wrong.

I chain 46 like the instructions say to then start working row 1. When the
pattern says I should be finished with the row I still have 5 chains left!
If I end the row per the instructions it would leave a big gap in the work
that wouldn't look right.

Can anyone help? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I read the
pattern, count my reps and still come up with extra.

Here is the site where the pattern can be found. They also have a lot of
other neat patterns that I've been saving
http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa071203.htm

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think this would
make a cute and easy afghan when it's finished.

Thanks,
Corine

Dear Cori -
It's possible you might be reading it wrong. When I did the math, it added
up. Hopefully I can help:

You start with 46 stitches (chain)
minus 4 (starting in the 4th chain from the hook) = 42 sts
then the pattern = 6 sts minus the 6 sts = 36 sts
then repeat the pattern 5 MORE times (-30sts) = 6 sts
then the end sts (sk 2 ch, sc in next st, sk 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch = 6 sts)
leaves zero stitches, chain 3 and turn.

It should work out fine. Make sure you're counting everything properly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you ladies. I did like you said Shilelagh. It looks weird but it
probably works in. Somehow it just didn't seem to fit I'm on to row 2
now!

Thanks again,

Corine

The way I count it, it comes out exactly to 46 chains. Maybe you left
out one repeat.

The first stitch is in the 4th chain from the hook: 4 chains
Then the first repeat occupies six chains: 6 chains
Then you repeat that 5 more times: 30 chains
Then you skip two chains: 2 chains
Then you do your pattern stitch one last time: 1 chain
Then you skip 2 more chains: 2 chains
Then you do a dc in the last chain: 1 chain
Total: 46 chains

When it said "repeat five more times", maybe you thought it meant 5
repeats in total, but it's really six repeats counting the initial one.

You said you had five chains left over; if you left out one repeat, it
seems that you should have had six chains left over. Maybe you should
make sure you're really doing the first dc in the 4th chain from the
hook. Counting the one that's on the hook, that sometimes looks like 3
chains.

Anyway, using the above summary, maybe you can make it come out right.

I also liked the pattern, so I bookmarked it. It would make a nice,
dense afghan, if you made a number of these strips and joined them. Or
you could make it in one piece by adding more chains to the initial
chain, in multiples of six. The only thing is that, for me, the stitch
would maybe be a bit repetitious. I like patterns with a good deal of
variety in the stitches.

I've read ahead and see you've found the help you needed, but I wanted to
thank you for pointing out that pattern.

It would make a nice afghan, ... I'm saving it. So, thanks, Cori. :-)

Thank You!!!

Frogged it. Redid it. Frogged it again (misread the @#$% instructions
again) Redid it, actually paid attention to instructions. Got it! NOW
I'm on to row 2.

Am now modifying instructions so I know how many (shells) as I am calling
them are in the row

Haven't had this much trouble following written directions since I first
started crocheting! I kept wanting to skip an extra two chains before the
final dc to make it "fit" then when I reread the instructions found out I
wasn't supposed to. Must be a lack of chocolate in my system so I'm
getting stupid.

Thank you for all your help. To use Sarah Grace's expression and I hope I'm
using it right.... I'm Chuffed! (pleased)

Happy crafting,
Corine
