1. The Journey of a New Earring, From Concept To Market
Tina Wojtkielo Snyder

One of the newest earring findings to hit the market is showing a
little earlobe midriffand it could turn the way people perceive earring
design inside out. Patented Sphearrings insert through the back of the
car, leaving more of the lobe exposed. Think of the bare midriffs on a
summer beach, and you'll come close to the look offered by this new
earring design....

2. Testing new High Definition (HD) Patterns in the shop
By Linus Drogs

Invented by Victor Joyner, a Chicagobased manufacturing jeweler,
patented High Definition (HD) Patterns are made of a light-curing
polymer material that can he injected into a silicone mold with very
low pressure at room temperature. After hearing about the exceptional
detail achieved by these patterns, and the subsequent clean burnout, I
decided to put the material to the test in my shop....

3. Road Testing Argentium Sterling
By Cynthia Eid

Invented in 1996 by Peter Johns, a professor of silversmithing at
England's Middlesex University, Argentium[R] Sterling Silver, like
traditional sterling silver, is at least 92.5 percent pure silver. But
unlike traditional sterling, which is 7.5 percent copper, Argentium
sterling has a small amount of germanium instead of some of the copper.
So how does that change things?....

6. White Wedding: The Marriage of Platinum and Sterling
By Nanz Aalund

Throughout the history of jewelry making, metalsmiths have strived to
perfect not only their artistry, but their materials as well. In this
ongoing quest, innovative metallurgists have produced new white metals
in an attempt to combine all the virtues of existing metals while
eliminating all the disadvantages. Their goal was to create a metal
that resisted tarnish and firescale, that was both malleable and
durable, that had a pure white color, and that didn't cost a fortune.
The majority of these experimental alloys have been based on
traditional alloy recipes with the addition of a few other elements.
Most alloys gained some resistance to firescale and tarnish only to
sacrifice the necessary malleability, or they added costs by requiring
the metalsmith to buy new tools and buffs to prevent contamination....

7. Blue Tourmaline
By Richard W. Wise

Sapphire blue tourmaline! Such stones are very rare. The search for
such a stone is like the pursuit of the Holy Grail. Historically, two
Brazilian mines, the Manoel Mutuca in Arauai and the Golconda Mine
northwest of the city of Govenador Valadares, are the source of the
fabled "sapphire blue" indicolite. The best of these stones have an
intense blue primary hue and a turquoise secondary hue, and are known
as Mutuca Blue. Stones of this quality are extremely rare. Indicolite
is found sporadically throughout the entire region of Minas Gerais....

8. Pink and Red Tourmaline
By Richard W. Wise

The Oro Fino Mine in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, about ten
miles east of the Manoel Mutuca mine, was the legendary source of some
of the world's finest red tourmaline, called rubellite. Stones from
this source have a pure red primary hue and a purplish secondary hue,
yielding a lovely purplish red that has been compared to the color of
the Bing cherry. Although Oro Fino has been closed for more than a
decade, the term Oro Fino Red has come to designate the very finest red
tourmaline, regardless of source....
