Default OT - We have slab!!!!

Finally, at loooong last.....we went down to the house site today and
there's a nice, still-damp slab waiting for us! It's one day old, according
to the sign. Woohooo! Progress at last.

The House Across The Street (that we've been watching as if it were our own)
was started in August. Currently it's getting the roof put on, and has basic
sheet rock up inside, all the windows set, but no front door or garage door
installed, and no stucco on the outside. We figure that has at least another
months' work on it, so we're figuring we won't have our house until March at
the earliest.

We went from there to a way-cool metal supply store today. Luckily it's open
to the public. In addition to basic cool stuff like stainless and copper
sheet, bunches of aluminum in all conceivable forms, and lots of big metal
pipes, they carry ready-made forged steel components (all those cool
scrollwork ornaments for fences, and just for pretty) and lovely hammered
copper sheet. We've had a new Brainstorm....a hammered copper backsplash in
the kitchen, and a copper range hood. The very helpful gal at the counter
even gave us the business card for a fabricator who could do the bending,
etc that we would need. It could work! Funny thing is, we got a price for a
similar design at The Great Indoors on Monday...$2600! The same copper sheet
at Industrial Metals is $108 for a 3'x4' sheet....we figure we need 6 sheets
to do the job. Unless the metalsmith is charging $100 an hour for the cuts
and bends we need, it's going to be less than half the price to do it
ourselves. I love having a real handyman around. G

Woo hoo! Your house could be finished sooner that that... it only takes
a couple weeks to finish a house if a full crew actually works on it
full-time. It's all the days when no one works on it that makes it take
forever!

Sounds divine, Karen. Glad you found that supply store!

I wish I could relate. I haven't had a house built for us yet but I've
built one which is another whole thing. I know you have to be excited. My
only advice is to go to the job site often to check things out. My MIL had
to do this when she had her last house built and there was a lot of things
she caught before they could be covered up or not done correctly in the
first place.

We did an extensive remodel on our house (tore the first house down to studs
and footings, and added a second story), and I was basically the "general" and
directed the subs, was there every morning to make sure that they were all
working, brought them McDonald's and coffee, etc.

We started demo on August 10, and moved back in on December 10 (unHEARD of
rate of construction for these parts!!!), and it was 6 yrs ago this December.
The best thing is that today, in fact, my girlfriend said to me "What did you
do that you'd do differently?"...and I could only give her two very cosmetic
items. We are very happy with the remodel, and have come to be very
comfortable with our home...

And...WE STAYED MARRIED!! LOL

I know that I'd probably put a couple of hooks inside the flange to
hold a spatula and large cooking spoon, just so they'd be right
there. I'd also see about getting an automatic fire extinguisher
built right into the stove hood, just in case.

Excellent ideas! They go in my "wish book."

I love my old Philly house, too, but like you the kitchen made me bonkers.
This time around I get a full pantry in addition to more kitchen cabinets
and drawers than I've had anywhere else I've lived (some places combined
LOL). The cabinet style we chose has no hardware, though it's definitely
possible to add some, which we want to do. I've counted 37 knobs! I figure
if we buy two each payday starting now, we'll have enough by the time we
sign our lives away.

I have a magazine with pictures of a kitchen in copper -- you want me to mail
you those pages for inspiration...?

((hoping it is still under my bed anyway...)
