Does anyone have experience showing thier craft in both consignment
shops and traveling to craft fairs?

I am looking for a venue and hoping to get some info as to pros and
cons of each

thank you for your time!

Hi, ktty.

Consignment shops --

You don't have to be there.
You can set your price.
Don't have to worry if it rains or it's too hot.
Don't have to set up/break down, worry about parking, etc.
Nice if you find really nice owners that are willing to work with you.
Depends too if they get a lot of foot traffic.

Craft Fairs

Sometimes the location is far, and we know how expensive gas is.
The weather affects sales.
Need to invest in how you'll display your stuff (Shelves, tables,
etc.)
Sometimes, it gets too crowded, you have to watch out for shoplifters.

But-- craft fairs are fun. You get to compare notes with the
crafters, ( I love seeing other people's work), trade stuff, etc.
Depending on where you are and what your craft items are, you can
really sell a lot if you get a lot of people.

What do you make? :-/

I've never sold anything, but I am a shopper.

I don't go to consignment shops very often. It seemed to me that everything
looked the same.

I love craft fairs, because I get a chance to talk with the artists. I
don't always buy, but getting me there is half the challenge!

huh, my Email took a dive on me...

So anyway, try again...

I am more of an artist where I should be a crafter, and more of a
crafter, where I should be an artist. plus too much of an entertainer
to really dig the consignment, or to stick to my sales at a fair....
sigh...

I got started in the whole craft fair thing at an early age -went to
Catholic school.

More recently, I am an airbrush temporary-tattooer, and I face paint
and do a bunch of hair and body accessories, and I have found that
they compliment eachother at a booth. I like to cross promote the
bigger entertaining buisness. I just relocated this year, so still
waiting for the exposure to sink in....

wow. this post babbles on....

I'd like to dive into the accessories more, but not sure how to market
them... or what kind of a stock to hold or bring with to fairs....
anybody care to discuss quantity and diversity??

Ktty, I think I'm like you (More of an artist where I should craft and
more of a crafter where I should be an artist...LOL).
I make garden and holiday ornaments, wreaths, anything angels/fairies,
or whatever my mind gravitates to (or should I say my 7-year old wants
to make with me?) :-)

Years ago, I tried consignment and it was just ok. The craft fairs
really were fun. But it's a hit and miss... sometimes the weather
changes and the turnout will be a bust. It's amazing what people will
buy. You get stuck with things that you think will sell but won't so
you have to be prepared to either turn them into something else or
give away as gifts. ;-) It takes years to really figure out what the
bestsellers are, then you also have to watch out for people who copy
things. :-P

You have a great idea combining the painting and the hair
accessories. You have to keep your booth interesting.
Where are you located? Here in California, the Harvest Festival and
the Disney Studios Christmas craft show where I was years ago were
great. If you can personalize, people like that, too. People will
spend $15 easily on gifts. Anything over that should be nicely made
or really unique in order for them to buy it. That's my two (or
three?) cents. Good luck!
