For those of you who are losing your regular access to usenet, try out
http://news.motzarella.org Several of us have been using it for a while and so far it's been pretty good. Certainly a lot better then using google. Lucille |

Lucille Thanks, Lucille: I have good access right now, but if that ever goes away (as it did with Sympatico), I now have motzarella/eternal-september bookmarked. MargW |

However, there have been complaints on alt.sewing that Verizon is blocking all Usenet posts, and will not even allow access to eternal-september, apparently because the State Attorney of New York State found some naughty posts on half a dozen sites, and demanded that they all be blocked. Those of you in N.Y. State with Verizon may wish to check this out. Olwyn Mary in New Orleans |

Dyan, as suggested below, many find motzarella.org satisfactory. I
understand it's a free service. I use http://news.individual.net/ It is not free . . . about $20/year (the rates just went up last year. I find it worth the price. I do notice, however, that not all the posts squeak through. So, I'm often glad that people quote previous posts. More than cumbersome! You need a reliable news source such as the ones mentioned in this thread, and a newsreader. I use Thunderbird as my email component and it also reads Usenet groups. I will say that Usenet has changed dramatically. I used to belong to a couple of political groups, but they are now quite rabid having been taken over by those who shout the loudest and most. Call me old fashioned, but nothing beats Usenet for networking. I build forums for organizations and have one for myself. Not the same. Still better than Yahoo Groups, which is the pits. I don't know how they've - for so long - gotten away with such poor programming. Inexcusable. Yet I have to be involved in a limited fashion because of commitments. Dianne |
