No, Sharon, not ruined. The commercial stuff called something like hot iron
cleaner will probably work. If not, and believe me, you want to try it
first, desperate measures will - they just are messy and can do some damage.
Sometimes you can just heat up the iron and keep scrubbing it on old terry
towels and iron off the gummy stuff. Maybe one of those goo gone or citrus
cleaners will work - but they're such a tedium to remove from the sole
plate.
If all else fails, you can go way out in the back yard and try gasoline
and a steel wool pad. Don't try this one inside. Do wear gloves because it
takes days to get rid of the smell of gasoline, especially if your hands
have dry skin. And rinse (wipe) lots.
Next time, my dear, use a press cloth. You can get a costly one that is
no-stick and see-through, or you can use a hunk of old sheet or a paper
towel. So sorry you have this to go through, one of quilting's "no fun"
lessons. Polly

Sharon:
Do you have a plain stainless steel sole plate or a teflon (TM)
coated sole plate? This will impact your cleaning method. Go look
in grocery store/discount store for iron cleaner, possibly made
by the Easy Off Starch people. (NAYY) Usually stocked with spray
starch and such. Read instructions and determine if it works for
your sole plate. Follow instructions, using a folded old terry
towel to absorb the gunk. Works for me .... YMMV.
Good Luck. PAT in VA/USA

Sharon,
if the commercial products don't work, I've heard of others rubbing the warm
iron over a "Bounce" fabric soffner sheet. They said that it worked for them.
I haven't had to try this yet.

I used a "Dobie" sponge with a bit of Kosher soap on the iron at medium high
heat and it seemed to do the trick. Thanks to all who responded.

I just learnt the other day what a press cloth is. I usually buff my
iron with sanding paper on the drill once in a while.. (the thing is
like 35 years old, and was given to me by my aunt's husband, who just
passed away, great guy!). I think that what gunks mine up is the starch
in my spray bottle.... it turns black and sticky.
