Default Tension?

While trying to sew his blocks together, Lee was getting frustrated. The top
thread and the bottom thread aren't 'connecting'. Therefore, the threads are
just laying on the top and on the bottom and the blocks aren't 'sewn'
together.

Is this a tension problem? If so, bobbin or top?

I'd look in my book, but I moved and I can't remember where it is.

The problem is either that the needle isn't threaded correctly or that
the bobbin isn't put in correctly. That doesn't mean the tension is
correct, only that if it were the tension, you'd have loops, not
stitches that aren't connecting. I'd check the top threading first.

Thanks. I figured that too and already rethreaded it. The bobbin looked
fine. Took that out and put it back in as well.

Oh boy, oh boy! Is this the place where I get to shine? Impress you with
my great knowledge? Well, about the only thing I know about?
Have you tried the trick where you hold the bobbin thread: in the
bobbin case, by the thread - out over a big, fat Irish lap or a pillow - and
see if the bobbin case will slowly and gently slide down. If it scoots down
quick or won't move even with a little yo-yo jiggling action . . . yipee
yoooo. That means I can come adjust if for you. Polly

Have you tried putting in a new needle. I remember helping students with
projects and the same thing was happening to them. The dull needle was not
going thru the fabric but rather just pushing down on the thread and not
connecting with the bobbin thread. Or try a ball point needle, often used
for synthetic fabrics, will slide around the threads in the fabric to
connect with the bobbin thread.
good luck

Sounds to me like a problem with the timing, the top thread and the bobbin
thread aren't connecting at the right time and place in order to make the
stitch. Tension problems should cause wonky stitches, not no stitches at
all.

Actually, I took the needle out and put it back in. I think it was in wrong,
but it had been sewing correctly for days that way, so go figure.

It's working now.

I had a similar problem once; took me 1/2 hour to figure out that I hadn't
picked up the bobbin thread after putting in a newly filled bobbin. Duh!!!
