Things made without patterns:

* Felt berets, tracing off my old ones.
* Aprons - ditto.
* Lampshades - ditto.
* Wine-bottle holders for gift bottles of wine - just wrap the paper round,
draw around the bottom, add a bit of seam allowance and a handle and sew.
Even nicer if the bag is padded with thermal batting.
* Envelope-shaped lavender bags or pillows from old dressing-table sets,
damask napkins or handkerchiefs. Fold up the points till they overlap, sew
three of them together, stuff with lavender and sew down the final point
like the flap of an envelope. Decorate with buttons.

Latest cheats
a: 1 yard of 45" wide sari fabric, sewn up the long length and across one
short end, stuffed with a normal pillow, and the excess length tied up with
gold ribbon - makes a brilliant long cushion for a sofa end, with a bit of
an Arabian Nights feel.
b: 18" of same sari fabric, flipped so that the two decorated ends overlap
and just stitched up the raw edges, then flipped round again - makes a
square cushion cover with the pretty border design going across the middle,
and no fiddly fastenings.
