Default Chatelaine design

Because of my past preference for embroidery and applique I
have usually had some sort of chatelaine to use when doing
hand sewing. Over the years I have made about 8 or 9 for
myself, but when I got posted from one Air Force post to
another I always gave my chatelaine to a sewing friend when
I left.

A couple of my sewers here have expressed a growing interest
in hand sewing and they have seen my current (old and
battered) one and want to make their own.

Does anyone have a favourite pattern for a sewing
chatelaine?

I used to just make up my own design each time I needed a
new one, but I would be interested to hear what others like
or dislike about features on any chatelaines they have seen
or used.

Cheryl:
Well, I do not have a pattern or site,
but I have a suggestion. I saw
interesting chatelaines in a craft
book/magazine. Make one with a man's
necktie. Is is probably longer than one
needs for chatelaine, so remove about
10" on one end and finish that end
similar to the other end. Use that
fabric to make small pockets for
thimble, etc. Use felt for a needle
book, ribbons for tying scissors, etc.
You are clever ... play with this idea!

I always wanted one but couldn't deside what I wanted on it, hence I don't
have one yet...I'm curious to see what others think.

I am sure I have at least one pattern in an old copy of 'Handmade'. Do
you want me to have a look and see ? It may give you some different
ideas.

I will have a look Cheryl

I know what 'having builders' is like.
DH has been doing the kitchen again. I finally have cupboard doors and
tiled splash backs,
now I am waiting on the corner wall unit and window frame and trims.

Default Chatelaine design

I am definitely interested! I've been having a look around for some
ideas, I believe there is a pattern in the first Georgia Bonesteel book
and there is a pattern at
http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/quilted_chatelaine.pdf
and another at
http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/htm...bboncaddy.html

I don't think I want to have the scissors hanging loose as I often sew
on the floor and can see myself getting stabbed! I also don't want to
tie everything on to the chatelaine with ribbon.

I would love to see anything that you have got!

Default Musings on Chatelaine design

Well early chatelaines (which held many different tools, not
just sewing items) were worn at the waist as clips or belt
accessories. But most modern chatelaines are worn on the
chest - perhaps a reflection of the increased time modern
woman spends sitting down. Our ancestresses were probably
on their feet most of the day. lol

The first two sewing chatelaines I made were a little like
the bibs off overalls. They had a clip on one side to undo
the neck strap, and had pockets to hold tools and
pincushions. I don't like having tools tied to things as I
use them so I tend towards using pockets or elastic
retaining loops.

I have also made about four embroidered chatelaines that
were more suited to embroidery work (no pin cushions, or any
tools really beyond scissors and needles). But I like
handmade sewing accessories and I have collected many
patterns like these
http://www.susaglenndesigns.com/Sewi...msies_s/67.htm
and have made etui similar to these
http://www.berlinembroidery.com/etuiboxkits.htm

But the last couple of chatelaines I made were based on
spool holders (horizontal spindles to hold a reel of thread
from a cord/chain/strap around the neck) and incorporated
more beading/jewelry techniques. I find that this is a
great way to hold thread when handsewing, and I can thread
as many needles as I want (usually about 6-8) and hold them
on the thread, then pull the thread through and snip it off
as I need it one needle at a time.

I have also been working on methods of using magnets
embedded inside a fabric strap or belt to hold tools such as
needles and scissors.

So from all of this I have determined that -

1. I definitely want a spool holder
2. I prefer magnets or pockets for holding tools to hanging
cords or ribbons
3. I want the chatelaine to go around my neck, not my waist
4. The total weight of the piece and tools must be minimal
to avoid neck discomfort
5. I do not want to have to pin the finished chatelaine to
clothing
6. I really like my leather stick-on Thimblepad, and I
haven't figured out a totally satisfactory way to hold this
on/in any chatelaine

If I make a straight strap/belt it will not fit smoothly
around my neck. But two shorter straps can be draped over
the shoulders to meet at a V-join at the back and hang
straight and smooth over the front of the shoulders. That
should be more comfortable.

So that brings me to what I want on the chatelaine -

- small scissors (held so that the points will not snag
clothing or work)
- Thimblepad
- at least 12 threaded needles (which become 12 unthreaded
as they are used)
- a small pin cushion of emery for needles
- a second pin cushion for silk pins
- a pocket or bag to hold thread conditioner (wax or Thread
Heaven)
- a thread spool holder
- a darning needle (my preferred unpicker)
- a seam ripper (possible one of the reproduction tools that
are designed to hang - http://tinyurl.com/y639pc - maybe
from a swivel clip - http://tinyurl.com/wmotd )

Too tired tonight to think further but
comments/suggestions/criticisms/links to interesting related
tools/designs all much appreciated.

Yes, you're right about the Georgia Bonesteel chatelaine, Sarah. I made
that one years ago and found it very useful. I attached the cover to my
thread snips to it so that they wouldn't stab me when put into the
cover. (Was that clear at *all*?) I also found the "pocket" part quite
handy, as I could put my thimble and a spool of thread into it, and my
needle and a couple of pins just went right into the fabric. I used the
thing so much that I completely wore it out! G
