I started with beads of colors I was actively using in a plastic
ice cube tray. It works to contain them, but is a bit deep and shadows the holes. So, more experimentation required there. Try Asian-food dipping dishes. ~~ Sooz ------- "Those in the cheaper seats clap. The rest of you rattle your jewelry." I suggest Beki's website for seed beads. Also check the Links List for
purveyors of seed beads (they're listed as such) -- one place has over 900 different colors of seeds. Out on a Whim (Beki's store): http://whimbeads.com/ Links List page 3, scroll down for Beading Supplies: http://airandearth.netfirms.com/soozlinkslist3.html ~~ Sooz ------- "Those in the cheaper seats clap. ... Aula, Shirley from UK here. Get a shallow tray and line it with velvet to put your beads on. You can pick the beads up more easily. With velvet your needle comes out of the pile easily but if you use felt you could get the point stuck in it. I use those polystyrene trays that I get from the supermarket with food in. I give them a good wash then line them with various colours of velvet. I use light colours for dark beads and so on. Shirley - Thank you for your kind welcome. That is a marvelous idea and I guess I'd better start saving those trays. I'd wondered what use we'd eventually find for them around here. -Aula |

... From Bead Notes: Threading the needle is really difficult. The eye is tiny. Everyone bitches nonstop about this. So don't feel dumb if you have to struggle.....it's awful. The worst part. If the end of the thread frays, cut it again and keep trying. You can also flatten the end of the thread by squishing it against a countertop, then paint it with glue, and let it dry -- then try to thread your needle. ALWAYS bring the needle to the thread -- not the thread to the needle (as is usually done when sewing). NEEDLES I file my needles down so I don't poke myself or pierce the thread I'm using. They become blunt enough that they don't poke me. I use automotive wet/dry sandpaper, or in a pinch a metal nail file. I don't have wire files or I'd use those. ~~ Sooz - Than you for those helpful hints. I will start experimenting to see what seems to work for me. I knew there had to be some different ways of dealing with threading out there! -Aula |

... the only thing that works for me is my covered cookie sheet. however, there are trays [usually round but not always] that are used for paints. the depressions are shallower, and i know a lot of people who like them for beads. http://www.whimbeads.com/dish.html and just about anyplace that has a crafts section has them, too. oh wow! Another marvelous suggestion! Husband has a couple of those hanging around unused atm, too, so I might switch to those this evening to see how this goes. I suspect my preferred position [curled up in the reclining chair] will impact on what works well..... In article , vj
writes: you're talking about bead embroidery, and i doubt if you want to use fireline for that! No, don't use Fireline.... Actually, if it's clothing that you are embroidering, you should use cotton sewing thread-- it's far easier to replace beads if the thread breaks than repair holes if the cloth rips (which it is likely to do if the thread is stronger than the cloth). For heavy-duty cloth (like denim) or non-wearables, Nymo is fine. I have a spool of Nymo D that I've been using for bead embroidery "portraits". Kaytee "Simplexities" on www.eclecticbeadery.com |

I knew there had to be some different ways of dealing
with threading out there! Oh -- and keep some sort of lip balm handy. If you keep your lips covered with balm, and you lick the thread, the balm will act as a wax and help the whole process. ~~ Sooz ------- "Those in the cheaper seats clap.
